: ***FUN WITH TRAIN HORNS***
HD-Nate 06-29-2004, 01:59 PM Some of you may remember this post when I bought my K5LA Amtrack Train Horns, the pictures are on page 3: http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4851&KW=hd%2Dnate
I really have been trying to be good and to not have TOO much fun with them. Believe me there have been several opportunities where I had to grit my teeth and keep my hand off the big valve.
But on Saturday night, after returning from the Bloomington Gold Corvette show in St. Charles, IL, to the hotel. We came across an obviously drunk driver, weaving, no lights, bounced off a curb a couple times, weaved into a yard. All at slow 10 - 15 mph. Fortunately there was no traffic.
He looked like he was trying to find his house and made several attempts to turn into a driveway only to turn back onto the road crossing several lanes to do so. I couldnt resist.
During one of his attempts to turn in, I slowly came up behind him, but still keeping a safe distance, brought the air tanks up to full pressure of 150 psi. and laid into the horns like a speeding locomotive.
I'm not sure if it was his yard or not, but he drove into the yard and was high centered and no longer going anywhere.
I'm sure a minmun of a change of underwear was in order for him.
Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, at least I got a drunk driver off the roadhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

freddyo 06-30-2004, 01:48 AM I just got a set of Nathan K3L's that I will be putting in behind and above the spare tire (I have a utility body) pointing to the back at about a 45.
Tried them out in my friends shop last week (everyone with ear protection of course). One guy started instinctively running away. He later said, " I could feel it in my scrotum."

You can get them off of e-bay.
Do a search for Nathan +horn
The K5LA's are probably the hardest to get and most $$$. I lucked out and found a guy here locally (Kansas City area) who had a set that was in need of cleaning.

HD-Nate 06-30-2004, 10:17 AM Where did you mount the compressor and tank?
I mounted my Viair 450 compressor under the passenger side on the frame. There are actually two empty holes there that fit perfectly.
I purchased a 6 gallon tank from a local junk store for $20. It is a perfect fit in the vacant area in front of the right rear wheel.
Guess I need to get some pictures for eveyone, just been too busy. I will try to get some taken tonight and post.Edited by: HD-Nate

Expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $1000. + for the K5LA's.
Its not 100% but you can almost count on paying $100 per horn then add $$$ for the ones in better condition.
In other words for a set of Nathan M3's, $300 + conditon, for a set of K5's $500. + condition.
Watch ebay, you will get a decent price every now and then.
Good luck.

freddyo 07-01-2004, 03:16 AM I bid on two different sets on ebay but got aced out at the last minute. I got tired of that game and just bought a set outright - $500 for a set of Nathan K3L's. They were grungy on the outside but the diaphrams and gaskets were cherry. I'm getting a two-stage valve from Matt Donelly (MDamtTC199@aol.com) for $150.
freddyo 07-01-2004, 03:20 AM Incidentally, you can google for "locomotive train horns" and find sites that have the sounds of the different horns. They are different.

I saw those. Dont think I have ever seen that configuration before. I would ask questions of the seller before bidding. I noticed that no one has bid on them which is NOT a good sign.
There is a set of K3's above them that already has 19 bids for less than $300.

You can just see it sticking out a bit going down the road. Since it is blue, it gets lots of second looks, especially from old hot rodders who think its a nitrous tank. Diesel Dually 07-01-2004, 12:12 PM I have an old Code3 siren unit with the electronic Air horn tones. I modified and mounted the siren amplifier in such a way so that the other siren tones are not accessible. I have 2 100 watt speakers hooked up to the system as well. So, while this unit is no way comparable to the KL3A or the KL5A, it does the job well enough. Now to find a DPDT switch that will match my other switches in the console...I will be good to go!

baimpala 07-10-2004, 12:15 AM Is anyone using the Hadley Ambassador series with the 26 and 29 inch horns? I'm wondering how they will sound. I ordered a set from campingworld.com You have to search around a little to find them, but you can get a chromed set (around 320 IIRC), and an anodized set (around 240 IIRC).
With horns that big it would almost have to sound like a big rig. We'll see soon enough.
Thanks,

Try the Hadleys or Grovers, any of these sets will be fine based on hooking mine up to the air compressor today! Good thing I was in the woodshop wearing earmuffs. They were still extremely loud. Under $300.00 including everything (bonus little air nozzle for airing up stuff like tires, etc. too): http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm?skunum=21160&src=SRCH&tcode=37

The Hadleys are a nice horn and the longer the better IMHO.
But there is no way they even come close to a set of real train horns. I was down at the Lake this weekend (Ozarks) and had a little more fun with them.
I crested the peak of a valley across the lake (a little over 3 miles as the crow flys) from a good friend of mine about 8:00 PM when the boat traffic is starting to die down. Cranked them up to 160 PSI and gave a couple good 6 second blasts. My cell phone immediatley rang, it was my buddy who said he knew it had to be me, you dont hear trains on the lake very often. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Federal Q2B is the growler siren you hear on the truck. It retails for about $1200, requires alot of amps to spin (it dims all the lights on one truck I drive) and is illegal for civillian vehicles in most states.
If you want an electronic siren unit check out Galls (http://www.galls.com) and then search for 'air horn'. Remember that you will get some full featured sirens and you will need a speaker.
Dont bother with the cheapies from JCWhitney. Not enought watts to make any noise.

Joe,
DO NOT use them in anger. These horns can HURT people.
Think about someones reactions as you pull behind them or worse alongside them. The K5LA's are rated at 180db with an 8 mile range in open country.
Now with that said, they are a blasthttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
The K5LA's are a bit more costly than most, but it is the sound I was after. Go out on e-bay, do a search on "nathan +horn". If you are lucky and find someone local who has them like I did, you can save a bunch of $$$. I asked if he had a set of K5LA's that needed cleaning, just so happens he just got a set in. So I drove up to his farm and paid about 1/2 of what they are going for on e-bay.
I used a compressor off of e-bay, Viair 450 and a air tank I picked up at a local junk tool store for $20. I used common Goodyear 3/8 air hose like you have on you garage air compressor and a stainless high pressure 1/2 inch ball valve I picked up at a swap meet.
I spoke with a Highway Patrol trooper friend of mine. He stated that it would be illegal to use them on the highway and probably in most townships. BUT, he stated that unless you caused an accident by using them, you would probably just recieve an illegal equipment violation and possibly a noise ordinance citation. Which is no big deal unless you continue to get them. He stated he thought most LEO's would get a kick out of them as long as they were not used in anger or to annoy people.
Good luck, have fun.
Are your guys train horns as loud as a regular trains horns?
Short answer......Yes.
Long answer, there are factors involved here that may make them not as effective as they are on the train.
First, I wanted mine to be totally hidden, mounting them up on the roof or bed was never an option with me. Your literally have to crawl under my truck to see them. Obviously, horns mounted up high and unobstructed like on a train will allow the sound to be carried further.
Second, Air pressure, the most my compressor will put out is 175 psi and that is pushing it. 150 psi is a good operating range I normally use. It has never been made clear to me how much pressure the trains run theirs at. I have heard anywhere from 150 - 200+ psi. So if they do run at 200+ then I am falling a bit short on their maximum efficiency.
HD-Nate.... they are rated I believe from 70-140 psi. Going more than that can crack the diaphrams. Increasing pressure increases volume but does not change the chord played. Besides that you don't really want excessive pressure lines in the cab.Edited by: hoot
HD-Nate 07-13-2004, 02:50 PM Hoot... Thanks for the information.
Hopefully the lines inside will hold 200 psi. I used Goodyear hose rated at 600psi, barbed fittings with worm gear clamps on the barbed fittings.
The guy I bought them from is the one who said 150 - 200 psi on "some" horns. 160 psi is the highest I have ever sounded off at and normally keep them about 140 -150 range. So far, so good.
I do know there is a big difference beteween 90psi and 120psi on my K5's. I had a small leak in the filter early on where it would not let me get above 90 psi. I was a bit disappointed until I fixed the leak and got her up to 120psi.
I may be looking into a rubber mount vs the solid mount I have now. It vibrates the truck, but, OHHHhhhh does it sound soooo sweethttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Pro400exc 07-13-2004, 06:50 PM well the horns wouldn't be for anger..just to tell them to move..

Also..being a young kid and all..if i am at a light and see some hot chick at the corner..would it be fine to give em a toot?lol or how about there is a buncha ppl in the city and your at a light..can you give it a 1sec toot and not cause problems?

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifSounds like you need to get you some Hadleys or something less violent. People relate the train horns with a train, its a distinctive sound that has to be used with caution.
Like Hoot said above, people react when they hear them.
I wasnt kidding when I said these things can HURT people. Not only with the high Db of these horns but from the attention they will get, both good and bad attention.
I made the mistake of blowing them while a friend was about 10 feet from them. A large group of friends up in St. Charles, IL wanted to hear them and everyone had moved back 100 feet or so. He was in my blind spot coming up behind me, he was about 10 feet away from the blast area.
The man was in pain for a few minutes and had ringing in his ears for the rest of the evening. He laughs it off now but we both learned to have a great deal of respect for these horns.
The further away you are from these horns the better/sweater they sound. Up close, they are too loud to enjoy, like in traffic. My buddy at the lake said "You would not believe how great those sound", that was about 3 miles away. Edited by: HD-Nate

They are loud, but they are directed out towards the passanger side and are much louder outside of the cab.
From in the cab they are fine except if you have the windows down and are next to a wall. Then they can hurt your ears.
All windows up and it doesn't even sound loud. Pretty amazing.
TEXMudder 07-16-2004, 03:26 PM HD-Nate, a few more questions from looking at the pictures...
What did you mount the tank too? I went and looked and my 5 gallon "may" fit in there (wishing I had a long bed) but I would have to fabricate some soft of hangers I would assume.
Do you not cover your Viair with anything? On another forum everyone was covering them up in fear of them getting too wet. From the looks, yours was just bolted to the frame. Is it okay next to the exhaust on the passenger side?
HD-Nate 07-16-2004, 04:57 PM Tex,
It worked out with my tank where the bottom brackets lined up with the support rails running underneath the floor of the bed. I drilled a couple 5/16 holes and dropped 1"x 3/8" grade 5's in through the rail end to the holes. Some string comes in real handy here </v:stroke></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:ulas></v:path><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shape></v:imagedata></v:shape>
You will probably need to remove the fender support rods. I had to fabricate a bracket to replace the fender support rods that were in the way. A simple 3/4" wide piece of aluminum bent to fit and drilled worked out perfect.
I have a Short Box also.
My viair is out in the open. I spoke with the people at Viair and they said water and heat are its 2 worst enemy’s. The inlet filter can be mounted remotely up higher in the engine area. Which I plan to do shortly. Putting them in a "Box" would shorten the life of the unit per Viair.
I have the Kennedy 4" and its at least 3 - 4 inches away from the pump. I have felt the pump after a long drive and it does not seem to be getting hot from the exhaust.
Good luck, I will check back later to see if you have any more questions.
If you want, send me a PM with your phone number and I will give you a call and we can talk.
Deadeye 08-03-2004, 04:57 PM This is a very interesting thread. I have been considering something similar for a while. I have a ViAir 400 portable which I use for inflating tires off-road. I would need to mount it some where I could easily connect it to an air hose.
Is there a pressure shut-off switch available for these compressors?
TEXMudder 08-03-2004, 10:38 PM Yes Viair sells one and they are required for their warranty to be in effect.
Night_Sailor 08-08-2004, 01:02 AM I put some air horns on my motorcycle which had anemic factgory horns.
When you need them you need them.
supatrucka 10-09-2004, 02:16 PM What's the differance between the nathan k3la and leslie rsl-3l-rf. thanks
El Hefe 10-09-2004, 02:25 PM good god I'd be in so much trouble if I had a set of those
HD-Nate 10-09-2004, 11:50 PM What's the differance between the nathan k3la and leslie rsl-3l-rf. thanks
Pitch and tone. There are websites dedicated to train horns, do a search for "train horns" or "K3LA" and it should list one of the sites that have sound bites from each style.
I prefer the pitch and tones of the "Nathan Air Chimes" vs Leslie or others.
supatrucka 10-10-2004, 09:56 AM thank you nate.
kb66062 11-08-2004, 01:50 AM I work for Union Pacific and our main reservoir is suppose to be within 130-140psi. So I wouldn't run much higher than that if you want them to last.
baimpala 11-08-2004, 08:47 AM So can you get some for us? If so, I want first dibs on a set of K5LAs!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
