Im leaving on a trip to Powell in a few days, and was poking around checking fluids and what not, and I found that the clutch MC was nearly empty. It may have even sucked some air, but I havent noticed anything different about it.
So, whats the deal with this?
Do I just add more fluid, and wait for it to break or something?
I havent seen a leak anywhere.........
DOT4?
What a pisser

Mine does the same thing. After 28K mi I took it in for the infamous "steering clunk" and asked the dealer about the clutch fluid level being on the minimum level. He said it was normal stating it was "due to the large diamiter of the clutch slave cylinder, a very small amount of wear on the clutch translates into a lot of fluid movement from the master cylinder". I don't know if this is true but everyone I know with the ZF says they have the same issue. Good thing I noticed it or I'd a been pushing air in a couple of weeks.

I used DOT3. Check out this thread http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=375&KW=88958860

Hmmmm....
Last I heard, DOT 3 was causing some hard pedal conditions for some folks.....
JMPDmax, any trouble with yours? Im guessing no.
Ya, I also had my steering lubed, but it didnt do a damn thing.

I can occassionally get the hard pedal in I 'get-on-it' while if fifth and then have to change gears...you know, gun it to make it over for an exit and then have to make a stop/turn off the exit. Doesn't happen all the time..no consistency. Anyway just a couple weekends ago I had a trip from Dallas to Memphis and back and never once got a hard pedal....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Had my steering lubed before the trip and all is quiet. The shop foreman said to expect it back in about 10-12k miles... He says GM is finally re-engineering the thing and they should have a new part out by then..

Is there any reason not to use DOT4?
Ive heard of other folks getting the hard pedal, so I wouldnt attribute it to your use of DOT3 fluid......
Thanks

Since I could not get GM part 88958860 as specified in the manual, I used DOT3. The dealers would have used it (GM Part 12345347).
No problems using the DOT3.
Since yours is an 02 I would assume that 12345347 is what your manual specifies and is probably the factory fill on your truck.
Beside DMaxAlliTech told me so..

Was yours burnt? Mine looked jet black, with some little burnt deposits in there.
That cant be right.

MT:
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I was on vacation.
Anyway, I was wondering about the blackening of the fluid too, so I did some poking around. Seems GM considers this a normal condition. The seals in the system contain 'carbon black' (or something similar) and will leach out into the fluid, causing it to turn black. At one time there was a TSB or something about this concerning the Corvette.
