Is a 93 6.2 in a 3500 van mechanically or electrically controlled? Is the transmission a 700r4 or a 4L80E? I can't picture a 700 in a one ton van with a diesel engine, but I should ask.

All 4L80s are electric, or are some mechanical with an electric switch to lockup the converter? Could the engine be mechanical and the tranny electric with a stand alone computer? I am being told there is some sort of computer under the seat.

Anything in particular I should consider for this vehicle? I figure the last year fo the 6.2 ought to have most of the problems worked out, especially if it is mechanical injection.

I'm being told it smokes a bit when cold, but runs well and gets 18 mpg highway which sounds like the low side of normal to me. A mechanic unknown to me mentioned the injection pump ought to be changed soon. I guess weak pump/old injectors could cause bad fuel spray which would contribute to light colored smoke when cold or anytime. Does this sound like good analysis to you?

I've seen remanufactured mechanical pumps for a few hundred bucks. How much for a new set of injectors and glow plugs to go with?

How are the glow plugs controled on a 93 6.2? Manual control easy to set up?

I've read the head to manfold bolts are different on a van version of the 6.2. Anything else different?

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't know all that much about vans or 4L80s, but I would guess that the transmission would be either a Turbo 400 (TH400) or a some form of a 4L80. If it is a three speed it is a TH400. Not all 4L80s were "electronically controlled"... Some were "mechanical". I don't know all that much about them... Someone else will be able to fill you in better than I can.

In the one ton, it would probably be a plain old mechanical injection system. I could be wrong on that, but I think that is what they had. If it has electronic controls they are fairly basic and mainly control the EGR system.

It may be that you will need to replace the injection pump and injectors, but be aware that injection pumps last longer than injectors. Injectors usually need to be replaced somewhere near 100K miles whereas injection pumps have been known to last a really long time. You will have to investigate further to find out what is really the matter with it.

The glow plugs may use any one of a number of control systems, but at at any rate it will be easy to hook up a manual control for them.

I don't know what all the differences are on the van.

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions just ask... :)

Thanks for the response.

I would think by 93 the three speeds were gone, not sure though. Any chance of a 700 over a 4L80? How about if it is a halft ton instead of a one ton?

Nope, there wouldn't be a 700 in 1 ton. By '93 the 700R4 would have been renamed and upgraded to become the 4L60, which is a 4-speed, Longitudinally mounted, 6,000# rated transmission... Not heavy-duty enough for a one ton.

You might find a 4L60 in a half ton. I am not exactly sure what the vans had for transmissions, but I would think that is what it would have.

Hope this helps!

Welcom to the forum, Chris.

That '93 3500 van has a mechanical Inj Pump, and the 4L80E automatic with a stand-alone TCM.

The 1500 would have the same IP, but with the 4L60E with TCM.

Do a search here on the various subjects in question for much information, and go thru the FAQ's for troubleshooting info

a mechanical (non electronic) 4l-80 was never built.which is too bad...cause i want one.they were all electronic.
