OK, I am having to replace the injectors on my suburban (long messed up story) and was thinking that I might as well change out the glow plugs while I was at it and in the same general area. Now I am assuming that these are the original Glows and injectors to the vehicle ( my search through the records that came with the truck show no replacements). I know through reading the threads that I should PB blast the snot out of the glows to reduce the possibility of breaking at the threads, but no where have I found what to do if the glow is swelled up larger that the thread hole. WHAT TO DO?? How do I get it out? What to do if the glow part of the plug breaks off in the cylinder? etc.. I am just thinking worst case scenarios, but would like a game plan no matter how small.
Thanks guys.

Someone recently made the suggestion that if a glow plug tip breaks off in the precup you can pull the injector and then grease your finger and reach into the precup through the injector hole. They said the broken off glow tip will stick to the grease and it will come out. Please tell us how you make out. My turn is coming soon.

yeah, in through the injector hole is the best way to get things out. So, pull the glow plug first, then the injector. That way if the plug breaks, you dont have to take out a freshly changed injector

Cool, the little tech tips always form a better game plan. Just waiting for my parts to come in and I'll be off to fixing.

i read that if the tip is swelled up and you cant get the plug out, pull it as far out as you can, then start up the motor and let it idle and it will pop the plug out.

when i read this i was thinkin yea right! thats crazy no way will i do that. well i had 3 plugs and i had to do it. it works! sounds like someone shot a 22 under you hood when they do pop out. and i did mine one at a time.. i dont think it would run with 3 loose plugs, and it doent seem like they have to swell much for them to be stuck.

wow okeydokey, i wouldn't have thought that would have worked either. idea kinda scares me though.

remember to put anti-sieze on the threads of your replacment plug threads in case you have to remove them later for whatever reason. They will come out easily next time.

heh...most of mine were froze. One wouldnt even pop out with the engine started! But i eventually wiggled it out! It was missing the tip! Upon furter inspection, it seems that this glow plug exploded long ago. Lots of carbon on it! So when I finally got it out, I started the engine for a minute to blow out debries!

i had my engine apart when i found a fat glowplug i spun the glowplug with an impact wrench and set a hack saw blade to the inside of the glow plug

It looks like its my turn to do glow plugs, today after trying to start it in the 25-30 degree weather and it just stumbling and sounding like its firing on one side i said screw it and pushed it into the garage to figure out what the hell on the transmission was leaking my 140 dollars in oil to the garage floor.. (shifter seal...grrr silicone time) ..

While under the hood afer pushing my 6000 lb truck in alone (grr again..) we started checking grounds and found the big grounding strap broke off, then we started looking over glow plugs and when i touched one of the wires it just fell off the motor with the clip off the glow plug still in the connector rusted solid into the connector and rusted out of the glow plug...

I've not heard of anyones glow plugs rusting the connectors out of them so i guess this is something new and special on my new truck of coarse...

I am planning on using the Ac60g or whatever i think i messed up the order.. but i am planning on getting them from adavanced auto and trying to isntall them tommorrow.

First off does it mater where i buy them?

Second off do i need to take the turbo off to get to the pass side? or can it be done through the well wheel?

Any pointers would be awesome.

I was able to do mine with alot of grunting, a bit of near cussing. I used 60 G's, they are gerat.

I also have a different model of truck than you do, but I figured since its the same engien its close. The drivers side is easy. Its the passenger that will kill you.

you have have to do this:

1. remove the wheel

2. remove the fender well

you should be able to get to everythign then.

On the 90's body style...remove the fenderwell. The glows are a piece of cake if you just take the time to do this first. I also had to loosen the downpipe, take the clamp off, and pull it to toward the passenger side about an inch. No problem and the glows are pretty much visible at that point.

As I just said in DieselDufus's thread, if you're installing 60g's then you better plan on a manul glow button.

and if you have remote start and are planning on swapping glow's you should use what ???? by the way nuthin wrong with my glowplugs yet but noticed the other morning it took a while to fire all cylinders and whoa the smoke hung in the air. cool. hasn't done it since yet been getting colder. the real test, i guess will come next week when we head to the adams river sockeye run ( IT TRULY IS A SPECTACLE TO BEHOLD ) for some 10 pounds plus rainbow trout. and maybe a sockeye or 2.... 12km long river and 2 million salmon. google it you'll see what i mean....Ed

Well, The new glows are in. They came out very easy (let 'em soak in PB blaster overnight) and by the looks of them were not the original set. They were 11G's. Now the injectors on the other hand were not fun at all. The steeler clown that replaced the IP must of had two bowls of Wheaties and tightened the snot out of the injector lines. So when I went to loosen them they just turned the injector, Major PITA!!! But after fighting them I got them out and replaced with the correct torque values!! All I am waiting on is a couple of O-rings for the fuel seporator/filter to come in and shell be all buttoned up.
I figured that while I had it apart,I'd install the remote PMD kit. I ended up installing it behind the bumper between the bumper and core support.

how awesome, really looking forward to that tommorow night, picked up 60g's tonight from AZ it was like 64 bucks out the door.. better then i thought it would be.. truck wouldn't even start to move it earilier and now that i see connectors rusted out of the glow plugs i know i'm doing them all....

So at some point these trucks DO run right and hopefully for a long time right ? lol.... Its one of the nicest cars to drive i've even been in.. for road trips NOTHING beats it.. not even our 05 duramax... once the insane power gets old the size of the cab compared to my 95 is alot smaller...
