Have you ever had a flat tire, tried to change it and could not get the lug nuts loose because they were either rusted on or a brain surgeon between gigs had put them on with an impact wrench? I had some so tight that I turned the engine over trying to get them off.
I carry a cross type lug wrench, a big one at that, but sometimes you need a little more help. I came up with a simple device that allows you to stand on the lug wrench if necessary to get the nuts loose. It is nothing more then a piece of 2x6 with some holes drilled in it. I used yellow pine because it is tough and strong. All you have to do is drill a series of holes down the center line of the 2x6. The holes must be large enough to allow the end of your lug wrench to fit through. (I am not giving any dimensions because you should size your helper for your needs.)

To use the helper, just put the correct end of the lug wrench on the lug nut, slip the other end of the wrench through the appropriate hole in the helper and place the helper on the ground. You can now stand on the end of the lug wrench arm. By the way, I painted the end of the lug wrench that fits the lugs nuts on my truck so I don’t have to trial and error it each time I use it.

This is a lug nut.

I've used a jack stand to support the end of the 4 way lug wrench. I like your method much better.

Thanks for a wonderful idea. Send it to Pop Mech or Fam Hndyman or some such mag and collect a $$ reward for such an excellent tip.

18v impact wrench or a piece of pipe & the factory supplied lug wrench does the trick

My long handle, (15 inch), 1/2 inch drive SK ratchet with a 1 1/2 inch extention on a 22 MM, six point deep socket has always worked for me. I ALWAYS loosen all lug nuts before raising truck. With the ratchet horizontal, you can stand on the ratchet and very easily loosen any nuts, and not damage yours.

I've never had to use anything other than my 18" Ratchet either, however that's because I have never tightened my lug nuts with an impact. Always tighten to 110 ft/lbs with torque wrench!! However for those that don't change tires on their own, the "tool" ag4gt came up with is pretty darn cool!! If you lose it... well, you're out 25 cents and about 10 minutes of work!! I say http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif!!!

I took the specs off the little leaflet centerline sent with my wheels, they say 110ft/lbs, so that's what I go by.

I know I did go 140ft'lbs on the stock rims, but I like to stay within manufacturer specs, that way if I have issues, I can tell them just the way it is.

Thanks though, the spec miight be useful to someone else.
