: Truck & Trailer Setups!
cdhd2001 09-05-2003, 04:53 PM Well, I will start this one off!
Current tow rig.
2003 Chevy 2500HD CC SWB D/A
2001 Wildcat 27rk 5th wheel
16K Drawtite slider hitch
Reese digital brake control
Previous tow rigs:
2001 Chevy 2500HD EC LWB 6.0L/auto/4.10 (Supercharged!)
1998 Chevy 1500 EC SWB 5.0L/auto/3.73 (wimpy!)
1994 Chevy 1500 RC LWB 5.7L/auto/3.42 (232K! all original!)
1987 Chevy 3500 Dually RC LWB 454/TB400/4.10 (heavy drinker!)
1986 Chevy 1500 RC SWB 305/auto/2.73 (really nice!)
1985 Chevy 1500 RC LWB 305/auto/2.73 (okay, hate baby blue!)
1983 Chevy S-10 Blazer 2.6L/auto (why did I buy it!?)
2000 Prowler 27.5J 5th wheel (never own another Fleetwood after that one!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif )
1996 Alfa Ideal ID30RK 5th wheel (nice, just too big for now)
1983 Prowler Reagal 28 ft. TT (back when fleetwood was good!)
1978 Flagstaff Pop-up tent trailer (only for young people!)
Okay! Your turn!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif
CS-Dmax 09-05-2003, 06:34 PM Pretty lightweight by most standards for the DMAX to haul around...
Current:
2003 Chevy 2500HD D/A CC, 4x4, SB http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif
Monterey 22 ft bowrider boat, about 5200 lbs on the trailer
Previous:
1999 GMC Suburban 5.7L/auto/3.73 (the boat was too much for it at 6000 feet elevation) http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif
4x4man 09-05-2003, 06:59 PM I guess I'll chime in next..
Current setup:
2003 GMC Sierra D/A CC 4x4 Short Bed...20K Reese hitch, Prodigy Controller
2002 Forest River Wildwood 28BHSS...custom hitch built in bumper for towing or as an over-engineered bike rack hitch.
Previous setup's
2001 Chevy Silverado EC 4x4 2500HD with 8.1L and Allison
1997 Chevy Silverado EC 4x4 1500 with 5.7L and 4L60 auto
1998 Ford Ranger regular cab 4x4, short bed, 3.0L 5spd manual
1994 Ford Ranger regular cab 4x2, flare side, 4.0L auto
Also had a 1999 Larson SEi 186 bowrider that we had for 3 seasons before selling it and purchasing the 5er.
I think that is about it. I seem to go through trucks like people go through shoes...but I think I found a keeper!!
Tsckey 09-05-2003, 07:06 PM Ok, ok, you guys have got me beat. I've got the TV, but not the TT. My little Coleman is more like the tail on a dog than a real tow. But that's one of the reasons I wanted this forum on the Board. There are lots of trailers out there and I will be in the market as soon as I sell my sailboat. So, the more I learn, the better. By the way, for you Colorado boys, I graduated from Wasson HS in Colo Spgs a LONG time ago. My folks still live there. Great state.

DMAX2DAMAX 09-08-2003, 05:58 PM Another light weight here, I tow a little single axle utilty trailer with my 4 wheeler and (not at the same time) I also tow a 22' Aztec competition ski boat that probably weighs about 4500#. Together they don't make much of a load but they sure tow a lot nicer behind my dmax than they did behind my 6.2L

VFRRider 09-09-2003, 11:09 PM 03 Silverado 2500HD D/A CC shortbox
Pulling 30' 04 Prowler Regal w/slide.
Best guess trailer running about 10k. Using the Pull-Rite Superglide hitch. For those of you with short boxes, the superglide is the cats meow. Automatic slider on turns, allows 90deg or better without getting out of the truck. No worries about crunching the cab.

CADman_ks 09-10-2003, 12:08 AM 02 2500 CC D/A 4x4 Totally stock.
We pull a 32' Corsica Cobra with a 14' slide. Weighs in at about 10K loaded. During the summer months, we pull an 18' boat behind it all. We also have a PullRite 16K SuperGlide automatic sliding hitch.
I would TOTALLY echo what VFRRider said about the SuperGlide hitch. I had a long box Dodge before this truck, and I got spoiled with that fifth wheel setup. You never had to worry about the camper hitting the truck especially when you were backing. I was originally going to just get a Reese sliding hitch, but I opted instead for the automatic SuperGlilde. I would NOT change it for anything. It's the ONLY way to go with a short box pickup.
I also have pics in my sig with the camper jackknifed. While I do NOT do this on a regular basis (I don't do this at all), I did it just this once for the pictures. For what it's worth, my fifth wheel does NOT have an extended pin either.
Here's a pic...

Colorado Kid 09-10-2003, 01:14 PM Tug is in signature. Prodigy controller (Man I love that thing!)
So far just a 26' Kit 5th wheel or a 16' lowboy car hauler with whatever needs to be hauled on it. Also a 10,600# bumper pull trailer for a few miles in Montana.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
The Kit has been sold and shopping is in progress for a newer, bigger, better 5th wheel (one that could not be towed by the '91).
Towing with this truck makes me wonder why I thought the '91 did OK?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif I'll probably never hook anything heavier than the empty car hauler behind the '91 again.
CADman_ks 09-10-2003, 01:18 PM I forgot to mention in my post that I have the Prodigy controller as well.
Man I love that thing!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
It really works slick, and it's not really a lot of money compared to some of the other setups...

'94 S-10 ZR2, great off road truck!
Curently towing a tiny 7-14 enclosed with 2 dragbikes inside, or pulling jet skis, or snowmobiles, or my buddies 24ft enclosed hauler with my Mustang inside it!
I bought my D-max since i plan to upgrade to a 24-30ft enclosed car hauler with 10-12 ft of living quarters in the front to make the race tracks a little more enjoyable in the summer, (plus $12k off the sticker really helped!) Plus after riding in my buddies D/A with juice and D-maximizer stacked running high 13's at 5500ft+ altitude i was sold on the potential of deisel power!Edited by: gsxr1216

Clearly and no suprise, the '04 is a pullin' machine, and has yet to break a sweat. Eventhough the 454 did OK, it did break a sweat and went along way to litening my gas wallethttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
neverenuf 01-09-2004, 02:50 AM ChevyPackin'Heat
That 36' Cameo doesn't exceed the 14k hitch capacity loaded? Have you ever taken it to the scales?
ChevyPackin'Heat 01-09-2004, 10:30 AM Neverenuf
Well... if not it is close I am sure. Have towed that trailer over 5K miles with it, up down, round d' round. To be honest, I looked at the 16K hitch, and did not see that much that would suggest the 14 K was not plenty of hitch. Frame mounts are exactly the same, so I am feeling OK with it. I have actually stayed with it until I decide if I need the SlideRite setup, but having a tough time justifying the $2K. I do not need it as my set up will allow 90 degree turns, which I have yet to need. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
Night_Sailor 01-12-2004, 02:07 AM This is what I've been towing--but not that often. I've only hauled it three times so far--about 45 miles total.
This picture was taken shortly after I bought this boat on March 1st for $500 from an estate sale. The owner couldn't bear to part with it, so it sat for 18 years until he died. Fortunately, fiberglass and teak can take this sort of exposure to the New England elements.
When I lived in San Francisco, I crewed on this type of boat for three years. Now is my chance to skipper one.

This is an Etchells class racing sloop. The list Etchells national champions of this class reads like a who's who of the best sailors in the world and includes my hero Dennis Connor. I hope to start racing competitively again in the next year or two.
It's one of most popular high performance keelboat racing classes. To give you an idea of what kind of boat this is; if this boat was a car it would a sidecar racer--light fast, and it's very important to put your weight out to keep the boat flat.

I was so excited about the boat I was out there in 22 deg weather washing and cleaning the boat. I could not have done that without lots of hot water to melt the ice before I could get to the dirt.

The mahogony floorboards were about 75" long. When I got the boat all that wood had rotted away, as had the kelson (which attaches the keel to the boat). There was nothing left but dust. I had to rebuilt the supports and decking from scratch.
These are the new cockpit sole teak floorboards. I spent more on the teak, rebuilding the trailer, and on new running rigging (rope), than I did on the boat itself.

rvtrailerpuller 03-27-2004, 12:12 AM My current tow vehicle is a Tahoe.
I pull a 25 foot lightweight Rockwood trailer, maximum loaded weight no more than 5,000 lbs.
The tow vehicle is very soon to be traded for my new baby, a 2004 LLY cc Duramax.
Then I hope to soon add an Eide Boat Loader (boatloader.com) to carry an aluminum boat up on top and a 15 to 20 hp outboard motor in the truck bed to keep my bicycles and generator company.
Some time in April my new "Baby" will come.
Tsckey 03-27-2004, 03:02 PM I was towing a little Coleman Cheyenne. Now an Arctic Fox 30U. I'll post a picture when I get a good shot of it.

DavesDmax 04-02-2004, 06:35 PM Well guys, We're off for the first big trip of the season. We're leaving for Hilton Head Island for 10 days of R&R. It will be the first pull with the Dmax.
I've did a couple of test pulls and this trip should be smooth and relaxing, not like the white knuckle trips pulling the TT with the Grand Cherokee.
I will let you all know how the trip was when we get back.
Happy Easter, unless I borrow our friend's computer while we're down there!
OK, I finally figured out how to upload.
Mine is 2004 (early w/ LB7) GMC K3500 CC, LB, D/A, Dually SLT w/ some mods and Retrax and Bilsteins on order. Still researching rear air suspension and an outfit to paint matching design as the trailer.
