Can anyone tell me how to test a relay to see if it's working? Can they be tested?

Thanks!

Use and ohm meter to check continuity across 30 and 87a. At rest there should be little to no resistance.

Check the continuity between 30 and 87 and it should be open at reast.

Put 12+ to 85 and - to 86 (or visa versa, polarity doesn't matter). This will activate the relay and open the circuit between 30 and 87a and close the circuit between 30 and 87.

So now you should have continuity between 30 and 87 and an open circuit between 87a and 30.

Thanks Max! However my relay isn't labeled that way--this relay came with the racor pre-oem fuel filter harness from lubspeciallist, it has pins labeled 1,2,3,(4), & 5. Pin (4) is not implemented (no tab).

Thanks!

If you relay is layed out like this, use this for reference. Most likely it is layed out like this as this is standard for relays.

Pin 1 and 2 are the coil and should have 12V when the key is on. You can then probe pin 3 and 5 to see that they have 12V.

ok, checking the diagram on the side of the relay, if I put 12V across 1 & 2 then I'll close the circut between 3 & 5, right?

Also, my power source (generator on the 12v output) is putting out about 20v. Will this fry the relay?

Thanks!

UPDATE: THE RELAY IS WORKING FINE. APPLIED 12V FROM THE BATTERY AND IT CLOSED THE CIRCUT BETWEEN 3 & 5.

btw: thanks for the diag. Max, that helps me understand what's going on with this thing!Edited by: donmiller714
