Ok, Why would Dodge switch over to the AAM drive Axel with their new Diesel, the most HP and TQ they have ever placed in a pick-up truck? What about the ole Dayna's? Would they not meet the spec's? Maybe I've lost something....but, who owns Dayna? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Why?

It was probably either lowest bidder or the Dana 80 was not up to the task of the new power levels. The American axles are pretty decent and have a superior limited slip. By the way it's Dana not "Dayna"

Burner,

Met a retired fellow that worked for a Dana plant. He told me they bought out so many different companies they sort of lost their focus on maintaining quality and production with their small running gear.

No idea if there is any validity in that but Chrysler did switch for some reason and I think it's all good.

The AAMs in the new Dodge are somewhat different. The rear does not have a drain plug but the casting is there for it.

The main housing is cast different to accomidate a different type of traction device. It is not the Eaton locker that's used in GM trucks, it a Torsen style all-gear anti-spin unit. Similar to the ones used in H1 Hummers. I just added a ton of pics under... Mag-Hytec in my sig

Which locker do you like better hoot? I assume that you don't see too much difference? I am really impressed with GM's so far. Way better then the days of posi.Edited by: Max Power

It was all about money, that is why DC dropped Dana,AAM is cheaper so DC says, but I still am not convinced on the durability of the AMM,my 2000 had the Dana 80 and handled 390HP and 711FT of torque with no problems..

I think the Eaton in the GM's is a good unit. The ones in the lighter axles did tend to let go under to many hard launches but the big ones they put in the 11.5 axles seem real strong. The Eaton is a locker with clutches. The clutches only engage when it locks as opposed to limited slip units that have clutches engaged at all times and slip on turns. They only part I don't like about the Eaton is the fact that it's an open rear untill thier's a 100 rpm difference in axles, then it locks. Kind of abrupt.

The Anti-Spin in mine is called that because it's clutchless, open but is torque biased. It's not a locker or a limited slip.

"By design, the unit divides differentiation and torque distribution into separate functions, allowing smooth, chatter-free cornering while maintaining maximum torque to both driven wheels. Because the unit is torque-sensing, power distribution is directly related to the traction available at each wheel."

You can read up on it here.. (http://www.sonic.net/garyg/zonc/TechnicalInformation/TorsenDifferential.html)

Looks like this inside...
