: On-Star, No Workie
Glamisboy 10-12-2006, 01:20 AM Does the head unit have anything to with the on-star system & how it works? When I try to use it or make a call it says unable to connect. The light on the rear view mirror stays red.
I have an '06 Sierra that I upgraded to the bose lux-nav head unit. My on-star does not work & has not worked in some time. Seems to me it stopped working aon a regular basis probably around the time I did the nav upgrade. I'm procrastinating on taking it in because I'm afraid they will deny any warranty work because of the nav "up-grade".
I bought the head unit off e-bay & wonder if maybe thats why they sold it.
simelliot 10-12-2006, 07:36 AM I have had my 06 3500 DRW for about 5 months now. I had same prob with on star. Turns out the on star computer was bad and replaced under warranty. All lights worked but it would NOT connect to the on star center. When you pressed the button it would just beep for hours and do nothing, never connecting.

DURAtotheMAX 10-24-2006, 10:13 AM you'll need a Tech 2 to read the Uxxxx or Bxxxx codes that the VCIM would be throwing...
swayse 10-24-2006, 07:47 PM Mine quit working too, but I really don't care, my free year is almost up.:D

Wow, that helps.
05LLY2500HD 10-25-2006, 04:09 PM mine quit working a long time ago, for no apparent reason. It kept saying "phone unavailable, phone unavailable" so I unpluged it. I had taken it to a body shop and afterwards it was no workie. Talked to a dealer but it was out of warranty, so I said screw it. They had thought the module went bad. Good luck.
Glamisboy 11-12-2006, 10:47 PM Well it appears the nav head unit has nothing to do with the On-star. The dealer had to replace the VCIM(??). It works swell now.
After having the air bags deploy 2x on the silverado I feel comfortable with the on-star. Especially after the last accident. We were on vacation, out of town, rural road, both my wife & I were knocked unconcious, due to a head on t/c. On-star dispatched the CHP, woke up to the sounds of sirens.

The Bow tie saved our day, wasn't as fortunate for the passenger of the other vehicle. This happened a little over three years ago. I was able to walk away from two pretty serious accidents inthat truck. Thats why we have an '06 Sierra in the garage.
Tutts 11-14-2006, 01:49 PM My OnStar chip went bad also a few months after I got the truck new. Replaced under warranty. Now, when the temp drops to about -20C, the red light comes on until the interior warms up, and then it goes green. Strange...
H2 Mark 12-02-2006, 01:16 AM My VCIM did the same thing. Red light and "phone unavailable" was it's favortie saying. It's most likly a dead VCIM and it needs to be replaced. Mine took 3 months to get. Back order like that means lots of probblems!
