I have addressed this before, but I wanted to see if there is any new info out there.

My truck was built in Mar '02. I had it reflased for a mild lopey idle when warming up--but not when hot or cold--about 15 months ago. At that time the service manager said I had the "good" regulator.

I installed Mega fuel filter in Nov of '03. I began to notice a slight smell of raw diesel after shutting off the engine if I sniffed the warm air coming out the right side of the engine compartment. the Mega is on the right side. I did not notice this smell before the Mega, but then again I never checked for it either.

I have checked the Mega's fitting and hoses many times, and all the connections are clean and bone dry with no smell.

After installing the Mega pre-OEM I got the mild lopey idle when the truck was warming up again, but I fixed that with a lift pump. I did some testing during that time and I am now convinced my lopey idle was cause by air coming out of the diesel as fuel temp was increasing. Since installing the lift pump several months ago I have not had any lopey idle at any time.

However, I still have the mild raw diesel smell. Raw not in terms of new out of the pump, but the smell you get after the diesel has mostly evaporated.

I haven't yet replaced the Mega, but I will change it and the factory filter this fall. I suppose a fumes could be coming form the water separator of either the Mega of the stock filter. Of course, I have re-tightened these, but it made no difference in the smell.

The truck runs great and gets great fuel mileage. I have never found any fuel in the oil--the oil level has never risen. A couple of techs have told me I have nothing to worry about. I am wondering if that is still the case. I am reluctant to take it to the dealer because they will balk at the lift pump--though the smell was there well before the lift pump. They might also blame the Mega. I'd really like them to check the regulator, but pulling off the Mega and the lift pump is a pain. On top of that, talk about getting a raw diesel smell messing with those tow items! Of course, they may reject service because of the lift, which some have told me is their policy, even if I am only asking about a fuel regulator, which the lift has no effect on..........

My truck has 26K and runs great. What is the likelihood I have a regulator or fuel system problem other than a leaky filter?

Any comments at all?

Could have a leak at the high pressure pump. Whatever it is, I would not let it just go... no one else is experiencing this.

Hey Blaine,

You the same fella that turned me on to Cleeburne Chevrolet ??

I still owe you one if so ;)

I will tell you this about your issue.. best thing I can think of is to bite the bullet... remove the add ons and take it in... I noticed a bit of a raw fuel smell... and eventually the injectors went... To me it would be worth it to know if you have injectors leaking...

Check all of the fuel lines going to the injectors (from the fuel rail to the injectors) by running your finger along them. Sometimes the connections seem to work themselves loose. At the pressures that these things are running, it is easy for fuel to weap a little. It has happened to me and to others I know. Usually its the fitting under the pcm, cause its the hardest to get to.
