A friend of mine has a 03 duramax with 19k on it and the last 2 times he took it out it would as he described "fall on its nose and when it came back to life it would be stuck in 3rd gear", and the check engine light would be on. if he shut it off and restarted it it would be fine. Any ideas. Edited by: blkbowtie04

If he is running a power module sounds like he is LIMPING the trans.......
Long shot but you could also check/replace the fuel filter ..............if it has not already been done.

Could be a few things from a NSBU to just a bad connection electrically ...
It's all guessing and to find out would be best to have the codes stored in the ECM researched to the problem ...

1500 miles and mine locked in first gear. First replaced the c solenoid. 100 miles and less than 48 hrs later same sh*t. Codes were P0700 and P0842 both times.
Today they replaced the valve body. They say this should fix it. Keep your fingers crossed!!!!!!!! Stealer did give me a 75K or 6 year warranty on the tranny.
I would suggest you ask for a free tranny warrany too! The worst they can say is no. But try and bitch until they do.
