: My nuts come off

Thought that might get your attention http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

The plastic nuts on the center caps of my 2003 2500HD LT D/A pop loose with some regularity. So far, I haven't lost any, and the center caps have stayed on, but these lug nut caps don't seem to want to stay snapped in place.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any solutions?

Thanks,

Jim

My nuts are just fine! Perhaps your nuts are not played with enough. Perhaps you've played with them too much yourself instead of letting a someone with some experience play with them?

You are screwing them right? You're not just pushing them?Edited by: Max Power

Stainless nuts are the way to go,if you have aftermarket wheels ....

Are you overtightning ??? Yes there is a retaining ring that keeps them in place in the chrome cover ...I dont believe the snap on but screw on ....

Any hoo I have way more nuts then I can use as I don't have plastic nuts anymore ...

If you can figure out how to remove the retaining ring, if it's present ,I'll send you some nuts I have a bag full of useless nuts,if yours are stripped nuts ...

These seem to snap on and cover the actual lug nuts. I will remove one of the caps again and study it more carefully but I don't know how the plastic nut covers are threaded. BTW, I have stock wheels.

I really haven't been playing with them THAT much, but sometimes if I've been doing some rough driving, they'll be flopping around and I have to put them back in place. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gifEdited by: 2fast2

I had the same problem with my factory wheels. the little plastic nuts in the center caps always came loose. I finally get them all to stay tight after I hand tightened each one.

I put one layer of masking tape on each lug nut in the threads for the plastic dress nuts. That makes them screw on nice and snug. Edited by: ag4gt

Sounds like you guy's are having a lot of problem's with your nut's.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif

Don't be so rough with them, be more gentle, very delicate item's. One twist too hard and they will always be loose.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Mine are just fine Thx http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

You should only have a beautiful woman play with your nuts....unless of course, your name is Bobbitt. Then I wouldn't advise it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

Seriously, though, the masking tape or silicone ideas sound like winners.

why? I don't use Aluminum wheels been using impact on all my trucks for year never had problem. Some of you guys are paranoid that you going to void your warranties. I keep my truck to they are don't run any more. I have some trucks 18 to 20 year old pull trailers daily.

Well if your nut's are 18-20 years old God bless you

Wish my nut's were 18-20 years old again http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

The older your nut's get the more gentle they must be treated in case of stress or heat cracks. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

I tried twisting my nuts last night after all your suggestions. Things seemed to firm up pretty nicely. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Let's hope it lasts longer than before!

I appreciate all the help. You guys are right there for someone when he is having problems with his nuts. There sure are a lot of experts in this forum. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

I put a dab of Silcon Latex caulking goop on each lug, install the caps carefully and let them set overnight for the goop to set up. Works good for me. The fix was recommended by my dealer.

Has anyone had them replaced under warranty?

If I do the silicone trick, doesn't that just make it harder to remove the caps when I change or rotate tires? As it is, I thought it was pretty difficult to remove that center cap.
