I have come to the conclusion that 305/55/20 tire will not work with a 5.5 backspace wheel since they are 12.5" wide from an earlier post I had. Will a 275/60/20 on the 20x9 wheel look ok? It is 33" tall and almost 11" wide. My concern was it would look to narrow, since it is right under 11" wide (10.98"). What are the opinions on this and if by chance is anyone running this size tire that can add some pictures. Thanks!

I'm about to mount 285/50-20's on 20X9's. 31.3 inches tall and 11.6 wide. I think your going to have problems with that 33 inch tire. A lot of members have had to trim the lower bumper and tie back the inner fender liners to get them to work.

Yea, I think the width is what is killing me. I use to run 285/75/16 on stock wheels and didn't have a problem with 5 or 6 turns on the torsion bars. But there seems to be no way to run a 12" plus wide tire without a lift.

Thats the same conclusion I came to. Wanted to run 305/50-20's but I dont want my truck lifted.

I guess I'am going to test fit the 275/60/20 tires tomorrow and will let everyone know if they look ok. Maybe this will open a new door to a different tire size for some. I was hoping to go a little wider but with 20" tires there are not that many out there to pick from.

Try the 275/65/20 that comes stock on the SuperDuty. Right now I'm running a 275/55/20 and it only rubs at full lock, I plan on turning the torsion bars and running the 275/65/20 next.

The 275/65-20 is a 34 inch tire. No way we can run that without a lift or cranking the bars. Thats what we are tryin to avoid. Now the 275/55-20 may be an idea. 32 inches tall and just under 11 wide.

Avis, I'm also curious about the fitment of the 275/60/20, so let us know how it goes.

Here's a post from a while back that may or may not help...

I talked to the installer and will be trying on the 275/60/20 tires later today. I will let everyone know how they look and fit.

Ok the test fit was done and I didn't care for the way they looked. The height was good on the tires looked great from the side but looking at the truck from the back they looked too thin. The tires were not quite 11" wide and need about 1/2" to 3/4" more. My search will continue as we tried the 305/55/20 and they were too wide. The 305/55/20 tires would surely rub at turning and going over a bump such as a driveway entrance. The 305/50/20 didn't have the height I needed because they were only 32" tall. I hope there will be some new tire sizes coming out soon that will be in between a 50 and 55 series. I will keep everyone informed if I find a new size that will work for 33" tall and say 12" wide.

Hello, my first reply. I also am going to be installing new tires currently I have factory specials 245/75 16's factory rims @ 6.5 width. I have seen 285/75's on the same rims they did work. However all the tire shops say the factory rim are to narrow and should be at least 8" for 285's. I am considering installing the Mickey Thompsons ATZ 265/75 on the factory rims (they are measured at 32"x11") I would preferr a 33" tire, but I don't want to lift this truck. I haven't considered a 20" rim as of yet. Avis I will check back regarding your installation and comments.

If all you want is a 33" tire they will mount on the factory wheel. Just be sure to check air pressure and change it as needed for the first couple thousand miles, you will see where the tire wears best. Also make sure you rotate on a regular basis. I ran 285/75/16 on my stock wheels and never had a problem with wear. If you want more of a street tread that will go in moderate snow, Yokohama makes a HTS GO51 285/75/16 that I ran and always got comments on the looks. I don't like a lot of tire road noise though.

Now I'm not sure of what your trying to do. There are no sizes between 50 and 55. And a 33" X 12" tire will not fit a Chevy HD without a lift. I thought you knew this and that's the reason why you were tryin the 275/60-20's. The guy at the tire dealer told me that the 305/55/20 would work on a 1500 with the torsion bars turned up around 2 inches. He said that the wheel and tire package with the same backspacing of around 5.5 (8lug) should fit a HD, due to the higher factory ride height and the torsion bars turned up. It makes since, I just don't know what is different about the HD and 1500 fender areas. Maybe someone can help me out on this, as I'm scratching my head over it.

Avis - Even though you didn't like the looks of the 275/60/20, how was the fitment test in terms of rubbing? Was there less rubbing due to the fact that it was only 11" wide?

There was no rubbing at all, the height was great just not wide enough for me.

Look at some pics of the front end between and HD and a 1500. Significant difference. I thought you whole idea was to mount some wheels and tires without having to do a lift. Cranking the torsion bars is lifting the front end 2-3".

I have the front end already lifted 1.5 inches and that is all I wanted to do. I lifted it by the torsion bar adjusters and feel like 1.5 is within the safe and acceptable ride quality area. I was trying to level it out some with the torsion bars and I got it fairly close. I have no intrest on going any higher using the keys because the negative effects overcome the positive at that point.

I see. I didnt realize you already cranked the bars. That should work with some minor trimming of the lower bumber valance.
