Our 03 duramax (purchased 7/03) 20,800+- mileage. Just replaced batteries & now all guages, speedometer, gear selection= all inoperable. Took to Chevy dealer. Can't reprogram or check with computer as module is dead?? SO THEY TELL ME, THE MODULE CAN NOT BE REPLACED UNTIL ACTUAL MILEAGE IS DETERMINED. So module must be shipped off to a firm that tries to access module and get mileage, then put that number on new module and plug back into dash. If they can't determine mileage, we need to sign document verifying approximate mileage. OK, TWO QUESTIONS;;(1) IS THIS A STANDARD PROCEDURE???? AND (2) SHOULD THE DEALER TRY TO COVER THIS UNDER WARRANTY (90 DAYS OUT OF WARRANTY WITH LESS THAN 21,000 MILES)?? Thanks, Tadpole

Another 03 with a instrument cluster problem.

Try unpluging batteries for a hour or so and retry again.

Do you have any documents that state your mileage recently to show the dealer ?

If the dealer will cover the cluster under warranty then let him send it out to try and recover the mileage and get a new one programmed for you. You can drive the truck with no cluster, just keep an eye on things like oil level and coolant level since you won't be able to tell any temps or pressures with no cluster.

If you have to pay for it out of your pocket you can get a new cluster with a nicer guage face from someone like JP customs for $300 to $400.

The mileage will start at zero again but as long as you don't try to decieve anyone into thinking the mileage is lower than it actually is it's perfectly legal.
They used to have little stickers that you would write the original mileage on and stick it on the door jamb.

If you want JP can have the new cluster programmed to your original mileage, for an extra fee of course.

Good luck

You could also do an exchange unit through Advanced Auto Electronics. They will send you a rebuilt cluster with a prepaid return shipping label for you to send your clustor back to them. They program it with the miles, etc and you keep using yours until you receive the "new" one. Cost $225 total. I had very good luck with them and would highly recommend them. They might let you guess on your mileage...

i had a few problems with my cluster and the ignition switch, they ended up replacing the ECM and the BCM. All is good now.
