HOOKEM 06-26-2004, 11:41 AM Sign me up for one. How much $?
dmaxalliTech 06-26-2004, 06:42 PM Price is still a little high for my liking. I am going to take my samples and have some quotes made. Its a very handy little bugger, I have used mine twice now and I want to go out and change my filter everymorning just to use it. I think its a good enough deal and simple enough, I have done a patent search initiation..... So, its patent pending. I dont want to have a batch cut and then sit on them, so before I commit to having a bunch made, I wanted to see the interest. My fuel filter head spacers are done also, will allow LLY element to fit on LB7 trucks. My new bleeder screw idea is under way.... Much Much Much better then anything out there now.. at least to me. I feel that pricing on these wrenches will be a bit higher then I originally thought, but I would expect them to be at least as much as a pair of fuel filters... Edited by: dmaxalliTech

hdmax 06-27-2004, 09:12 PM I have changed the fuel filter just 3 times, and have never chewed up the plastic piece on the bottem. Matter fact the first time I removed it, I was able to do so by hand. I really don't see the need in a new wrench, but to each his own! I could see someone like Eric or a mechanic needing one, but all the others want one just to add to the toolboxhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Which there is nothing wrong with thathttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
I changed the fuel filter just before going on vacation at 59,600 miles. I cut the filter open and just about 5/8 of it is dark. That is the way all 3 has been and that is with about 20,000 miles on them. I must be getting really clean diesel. At this rate, I will need to change the fuel filter no more then 12 more times if I run it too 300,000 miles.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
So No wrench needed here, sory!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
DmaxProf 06-27-2004, 10:27 PM Eric,
Since I almost managed to crush the WIF the first, and only time so far, that I changed the fuel filter, I am interested in one of the wrenches. As long as it's cheaper than the new WIF I just purchased from you.
dmaxalliTech 06-27-2004, 10:53 PM Mike, if your able to take your sensor off by hand, either your a guy I dont wanna meet in a dark alley, or its not tight enough.. I struggle with these using pliers, let alone by hand.. But hey, thats ok.
Dmaxprof.... If I can get the quanity up, then the price will be low.... Looks like I got a solid 25 or so at this point.

Great idea and my interest is high, why not make them out of aluminum. I doubt if the nylon WIF will wear them out.
dmaxalliTech 06-28-2004, 06:51 PM Nate, prototypes are 1/4" aluminum, but not eliminating the possiblity of 10 gauge stainless and someother materials my people who are bidding may think off.

RonJT 07-30-2004, 07:29 PM Great tool to have--I am down for one.
dmaxalliTech 07-31-2004, 10:39 PM I have some samples made up, a bigger batch now. They are 10 gauge S/S. I like them, but want a few changes done to make them a bit better, I want to get the edges softend up some, the handle a bit thinner for ergonomics and a finish of some sort to give it a quality look. I think I will be able to get the price down to about the average price of two fuel filters. May do a promo thing with the sensors cause I dont think they will work well on damaged sensors so you will need to have a good sensor to start with. I have started to build up my stock of them in preperation.
vjb0456 08-01-2004, 09:08 AM eric I will take one with promo or without.
The credit card is in hand, waiting for your announcement.
silva455 08-02-2004, 12:04 PM I'd like one also. Have you looked into cutting them with an abrasive water jet? It's faster and cheaper than EDM wire cutting. We've used it here at work with good results. PM me if you want more info.
dmaxalliTech 08-02-2004, 04:13 PM the last batch I have appears to be lazer cut....
T-Rex 08-02-2004, 05:49 PM I have a set of AN wrenches I got from either Summit or Jeg's. They are anodized aluminum with short handles, but kind of beefy. They fit my larger than average hands nicely and provide just enough torque. I like the thicker handles and working ends of the tools for better control and comfort. They were relatively inexpensive if I recall. Just a thought.....
Looking forward to adding a WIF wrench to my toolbox....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

dmaxalliTech 08-25-2004, 12:29 AM Update--
Talked with the shop that is making them.. Will have a nice anodized finish, also the handle end will have a screwdriver tip machined in to accomodate the bleeder screw. It should fit it exactly to prevent rounding of the screw etc. I know it wont work on all trucks, but it should work on the majority of them. Also the spacers that will allow LLY elements on the LB7 should be ready at same time.. Expecting to have first batch around Labor day

Thanks..

Eric,
Do you want a PM on those of us who are wanting one of these, or are you keeping track from the posts?
Can you give some feedback on the difference of the filters on LLY and LB7 and why the spacer is needed.
Thanks..
The LLY filter is about 3/4 inch longer than the LB7 so it won't clear the LB7 rocker covers without an adapter similar to the one on the LLY.
Since the LB7 is no longer available in new trucks, Eric is anticipating that the LLY filters will become more common place and easier to get in the future, and he'll only have to stock one type for his online store. Or at least that's my take on it based on previous posts.
ArrBee 08-25-2004, 09:21 PM I have changed the fuel filter just 3 times, and have never chewed up the plastic piece on the bottem. Matter fact the first time I removed it, I was able to do so by hand. I really don't see the need in a new wrench, but to each his own!
Same here, first time was a little bit tough, I think I actually used a bench vice. Given that it is an O-ring seal, I feel that a smear of engine oil and hand tightening is adequate - ergo hand tight ON means hand loosen OFF. Using a wrench might cause the problem you think you're buying it to solve (-:
Sorry Eric, mark me a no buy on this one, maybe the next goodie.
dmaxalliTech 08-25-2004, 09:47 PM Zeeb is correct in his statements. The LLY filter is larger and therefore should be a better filter choice. My price on even the Frams is going up to almost what an OEM LLY element is. Easier to stock one filter then 2, especially when you have over 100 of eachhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
The spacer will allow it to fit and will not require any plumbing changes, of course, some will find fault with it, but if ya dont like it, dont order it. I am not keeping track of who wants one or anything, I had to make a minimum order with the machine shop and so thats how many I got. If I sit on them, my gamble.
HDmax and arrbee, I appreciate your honesty, but nobody really liked the concept of a motorized vehicle when they had the trusty horsehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

I priced both the LB7 and LLY filters at my dealer yesterday and the LLY is 5 bucks cheaper.A larger filter and cheaper $$ sounds like the way to go for me. I'm a little confused as to how this spacer will work. Does it offeset the location of the filter slightly as to not hit the fender liner? As I understand it the LLY filter is longer but how does adding a spacer account for this? I've not seen a LLY setup so I'm just trying to picture what you guys are talking about.
Thanks

Eric
My problem is the LB7 filter is very close to valve cover, can hardly get filter wrecnh on. Will this spacer help in this area? Tried loosining bolts on filter head and moving away from v/c but would not move far enough. If so i want one with the wif tool and the white tail gate handle lol
Genohttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif
Max Owner 08-26-2004, 07:30 PM Geno; just put the filter on hand tight. Won't need the wrench. I haven't had any problems yet.
T-Rex 08-26-2004, 07:55 PM I install my filters and WIF sensor hand-tight as well; however I believe one of the things that sets some mechanics above the rest is the tools. I can certainly get by without the WIF wrench, but then again I can also use a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench on just about anything...anything else I can use a hammer...or a bigger hammer! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif</v:shape>
Specialized tools make things awful convenient, especially if you are well organized and can find what you’re looking for. Besides, I may give myself the benefit of not really "needing" some specialized tools, but I'm not always wrenching on my own stuff. Get it?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
Now, where's mine, Eric?
Max Owner 08-26-2004, 10:08 PM T Rex; you could work in industrial maintenance. Need a torch and a welding machine.
dmaxalliTech 08-26-2004, 10:47 PM Geno, the spacer will help you get in there better. That WIF wrench may be a specialized tool, but if your like me, fighting those suckers all the time, its a welcome addition to your tool box. I cant afford to just install the sensor hand tight as some have mentioned above.. when is the last time we read about a dealer improperly installing filter and leaving guy stranded? Too much of a gamble
Kennedy 08-27-2004, 12:04 AM Update--
Talked with the shop that is making them.. Expecting to have first batch around Labor day
Yup, they should be here waiting when Eric gets here for Open Househttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
flhrciblueice 08-27-2004, 02:24 AM T Rex; you could work in industrial maintenance. Need a torch and a welding machine.
And a multimeter and leatherman.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Gruber 08-27-2004, 04:09 PM I just changed my filter last night and one of those wrenches would have been handy. I used Channel Locks twice on it and it has marred it. I'm with Eric on the tightening issue.I bought a strap wrench at pepboys that works in conjunction with a 1/2" dr. ratchet. It's really no problem to slip it on over the filter before you reconnect the wire and cinch it up a little, "Since nature always sides with the hidden flaw". BTW someone mentioned taking out the battery. I tried it last night and it is worth it IMHO. Never had to go under the truck...CALhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

MMMM Industrial maintenance - Oxygen lance and a 30 ton cherry picker. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Oh, I guess that is HEAVY maintenance. Oh yeah, we also used an old Warner Swazey HOPTO with a nitrogen charged hammer and when we wanted to move things we grabbed the Terex, TROJAN with the 6 yard bucket from next door. Still needed a wiggy for electrical troubleshooting.
Thankfully, I gave that up to work for a shampoo factory. More in the line of the multi-meter and the leatherman. At least I will live a little longer.
1BADDMAX 08-27-2004, 06:51 PM Just changed the fuel filter. Boy I can't wait for the WIF tool, too bad I'll need a new WIF also! It's a permanent vice grip size now http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif. I also managed to crack it a little bit. At least it's only cracked around the bottom where I've gripped it with the vice grips. Just wish Eric already had the WIF wrench ready so I could get it all in one order.
Eric you still didn't sy if the lly adapter will get the filter away from the v/c or not. If it doin't I will return for credit. shhhhhhhhhhh maybe I can pawn it off on NUT. And like you I was taught as a little feller to tighten every thing I do and it will stay. (my dad)

modified 08-27-2004, 09:47 PM The LLY fuel filter is longer, (which some think this means better), and is cheaper ??? Somehow I can’t believe that GM would give us a better filter, for less money, unless these are not made in USA.
Has anyone done any filter testing on these new LLY filters to see how good a deal these really are?
T-Rex 08-27-2004, 10:04 PM That sounds funny when, figuratively speaking, Duramax has Isuzu written all over it!
Now, I don’t manufacture filters, but I am familiar enough with the manufacturing industry to know that sometimes cost savings in manufacturing improvements are passed on to consumers. That should not be inconceivable for even American made goods.
Now, I do know a thing or two about filtration---apples to apples if the DP does not suffer from the larger element then the greater surface area of the larger filter would have greater potential of capturing more contaminants---granted that the longer canister does in fact have more of the same filter media inside, which I do not know.
Does anybody suppose that my DVD player is somehow inferior because it was made “over there?”Edited by: T-Rex
dmaxalliTech 08-27-2004, 10:12 PM Geno, you blind old man! LOL..
Yes, the spacer will get the filter a bit away from the valve cover so you can fit your fat fingers in therehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif I wont accept returns from you cause you have kooties!
In all seriousness, the spacer is just a simple piece and I include two longer bolts that will be needed. I have one on my truck and will get a pic of it up here soon. As for the wrenches, I estimate just a week away! I have stocked up on WIF sensors for those with mutilated sensors. Unfortunatly, my wrench wont be able to grip a damaged sensor. Probably do a buy both and save type deal for those.

According to the three Racor engineers I spoke with while investigating and installing their pre-OEM kit, the LLY filter media and everything else except the total length, is the same as the LB7 filter. None of them could explain why the change was made.

So that the “happily uninformed” could go that much longer before they have to take it back to the dealer.
Spinmaster 08-28-2004, 12:47 PM How can I get one? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
LanduytG 08-28-2004, 06:44 PM I think I know why they changed them. In cutting open my LLY filter to see what the difference was between it and the LB7, I saw that the LLY element is the very same other than one end as one of the 7.3 Power Stroke elements. Why have 2 element sizes when you can have one and cut cost and still get the job done. Well sort of get the job done.

dmaxalliTech 09-04-2004, 03:55 PM Got the first batch back, they turned out very very well as I expected
Anodized in blue, features a nice screwdriver style bit on the handle end which is cut to grip the bleeder screw. A dual purpose tool!
I will try and get some pics up later this weekend, also will put them on the website. Price for the wrench will be 50.00. If your WIF sensor is damaged, you will need to replace it as the wrench will not grip on a damaged sensor. Combo wrench and sensor will be 80.00. Save 10.00 on the pair.
Murray the Cop 09-04-2004, 06:44 PM Eric,
The wrench is awesome !!!! and I got the first one. Great design and after a few destroyed sensors, those who didn't see a need for it, will. The only draw back is that it's BLUE (like everything else). I gotta get some sleep before I start draining. Talk to you later in the week.

LARSONEM 09-08-2004, 07:49 AM So what happened to the price in the neighborhood of $30?
TheBac 09-08-2004, 08:05 AM Guys,
Bought one of Eric's wrenches last nite (while we were screwing around with my truck...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif) He "twisted my arm" so-to-speak, or was it the incredible sales pitch? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
It's a VERY nicely made tool...beefy in my opinion. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif I looked at it this way....I'm making a contribution to the future Taj MaDuramax he's gettin ready to build! Oh, BTW, this tool is one that will stay in-the-truck! Really too nice a piece to toss in the tool box.
If you like neat tools....buy one of these.

dmaxalliTech 09-08-2004, 10:10 AM So what happened to the price in the neighborhood of $30?
Dont recall ever going that cheap.
My quote from page one of this thread
"I would expect them to be at least as much as a pair of fuel filters... "
Thats right in line with what I thought, I get 46 and 50 for a pair of fuel filters depending on type, 60 for a pair of the OEM lb7 so, I am right there
toy fever 09-08-2004, 09:22 PM Eric,
My wrench and wif sensor came today. I already put it to good use. Put the boogered up wif sensor on a spare filter for emergency use. Now I just need to find time to put the LLY filter spacer in and I will be set.
Thanks for a great product!!!

dmaxalliTech 09-08-2004, 11:23 PM Tommy, yea, gotta get that spacer up and going, but likely spacer will have to be purchased with an LLY element. After all, isnt that whats its for? maybe a filter, spacer wrench and sensor combo?

We use the lancing rods regularly. I also use a 30 ton Terex and 18 ton Grove regularly. An old guy that just retired from my place of work used to always say all that was needed was a leatherman and meter. He was an electrician only though. Most of the guys in our maintenance department now are both electricians and mechanics(higher pay rate), so the new rule is leatherman, meter, channel locks(for the bigger stuff--up to knocker wrench sizes), and a hammer.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
Sometimes, it would be nice to get by with no more tools than that. Very few guys want to pick up or carry my tool bag, and no one likes to come down off of a piece of equipment to get the Major tools out of their toolbox or locker.
