Ok guys my buddy is looking to buy a 6.2 diesel in a 1500 Reg. Cab LB 2wd and he was wondering since it has 107K if its worth buying and he is kind of worried about the price being so low at 1800 so if u guys can post back of maybe some stuff to look for and some opinions on the 6.2 thatll be great
107k is nothing for one of those. I just took apart one that had over 300k on it and it's still in good shape (inside the engine that is).

Prior owner care would be the main concern. How hid he use it, how did he maintain it. How is your friend intending to use it. The 1500 with the 6.2 is an excellent mileage "passenger" vehicle. It is not intended to be a "tow" vehicle. A few light tows now and then are ok, but you will be slow! As a daily driver, the 6.2 will last a long time and deliver good fuel efficiency. I get 22 mpg on the freeway with our 6.2 powered Suburban. 200,000 miles is not unusuall for a well cared for 6.2.

107K... What's he worried about? It's just getting broken in...
Does it have an automatic transmission? If it does, it will have the 700R4 (since it is a 1/2 ton) which is not known for durability although it is great for fuel economy. The tranny is really the thing you need to worry about. Some will last forever, others won't make 60k miles. A test drive is an absolute must to make sure that the transmission is good. Frequent towing is out unless you modify the transmission to hold up to it. If it is a manual transmission, you can ignore that entire paragraph.
The 6.2 is a pretty decent engine. Not a race engine (what do you expect from a non-turbo diesel?), but a good engine. Lasts a long time, gets good fuel economy, has that diesel rattle... What more could you want?
Power (in stock configuration) is similar to a 305 gasser only the torque is there from idle all the way up to 3600 rpm and it doesn't use gallons and gallons of fuel to get across town.
There are occasional problems with head gaskets, but that is common on diesel engines due to their high compression. Do check to make sure the head gasket on the truck is not blown before purchase... Watch for white smoke that smells rather sweet. Remove the radiator cap with the engine running and look for bubbles in the coolant. If it is blown, the price drops accordingly.
Hope this helps!

107K is just getting started. Go for it at that price.

Just getting broken in.
Be sure to use some Lucas in the fuel and drive it like you stole it.

I have had two 6.2s in Vans that ran well over 300K with very little maintenance. The hardest thing was cahnging the air filter in a van body, a problem you wont have with a pick up.
I also recommend Lucas as well as Power Service. When you IP becomes worn, you wire in a cheap electric fuel pump, back by the tank and you will get another 50 60K out of the pump.

I got almost 300k on mine and I still drive it about 150 miles a day getting excellent fuel mileage. Of course i'm very partial when it comes to my truck. I'll defend every piece of rust on it :ro)

I don't know what year truck you're talking about, but I often see 1/2 ton 6.2 diesel trucks that are 2WD, in the $1000 price range. So, to me the price does not seem unusual. And - about any 6.2 being barely broke in at 107K - well yeah, if it's been taken care of. I got 500K out of a 6.2 tow-vehicle. But, I've seen many that were ruined before they hit 80K. All it takes is a glow-plug system to go bad and have someone start dumping excess ether into the engine everyday to start it. And - there are many other ways to ruin what was once a good engine. Seems to happen a lot more with diesels than gas - due to many people not knowing much about them.
