We have a early 2002 Duramax/Allison. Everything was great until the injectors failed at 80K. Now at 85K we have a slow fuel leak from under the frame just under the drivers seat. What is that thing - a fuel pump? Why does it have so many fuel lines in and out of it? It is a slow leak that is only detected by smell. No dripping. No codes. Is this a common problem? How soon should we take it in - how many miles before it stops us beside the road? Thanks everyone.

Your injector repair should of been covered by Warranty with no cost to you.

The iten located under the drivers seat is the fuel cooler. It is located on the return line side of the fuel system. I haven't heard of any failing before but yours could of been damaged by off roading or been damaged by road debris.

If there is a slow leak it should be covered with grime by now and should be easy enough to find. Fix it before it turns into a big leak and leaves you stranded.

There's no pusher fuel pump on the Duramax's only a low pressure pump combined with the high pressure pump on the engine that sucks fuel from the tank up to the engine.

If its under the drivers seat, look carefully at the fuel lines. That location is about where the lines transition from running along the frame too running along the transmission. There is a short section of rubber line where it makes the 90 degree turn from the frame to the trans. Check there first.

The unit on the frame under the driver's seat with multiple lines is the ABS unit. There are only two fuel lines running along the inside of the frame. If your ABS is leaking it's brake fluid, not fuel.

I crawled under and took a quick look. The leak appears to be in the body of the device. It could be from one of the fittings, but the body is clean with a fuel drip hanging on the bottom of the housing. The fuel lines to and from it appear clean and dry, but it could be a fitting crossing over the top side. I will get back under there later with a mirror and light. It only leaks when the engine is running.

Here's an update. We thought we were leaking diesel from the tank return line. Every time we filled up we noticed oily looking wet spots on our step rail along the drivers side. We also noticed a oder that we though was fuel every time we shut the engine down. This happened while traveling and we took it to a small town dealer in MA. They traced it forward and cleaned the drivers side of the engine block before they found the source.

Our truck has a grouping of weeping pin holes in the engine block. Porous cast iron. It is misting out a spray of coolant that is blowing back unto the hot engine resulting in a smell that we though was fuel. They transferred us to a larger dealer and repeated the diagnostics. We were still under the 100,000 mile/5 year GM engine warrantee by only three days. We are now in a GM supplied rental car and we have a complete new engine on the way from Chevrolet. We do not yet have a straight answer on what engine it is or what the warantee will be.

That's the first time I ever heard of that one.

Good luck to you.

At least it is covered under warranty.
