Before I ordered my LBZ I was considering switching to a gasser last winter and test drove an 06 F350 Lariat with the 5.4, a Lariat with the V10 and a Chevy 2500 with the 8.1 Ally. The Ford's made alot of engine racket without much action to show for it. They are very noisy engines (mechanically, not a the tailpipe) and all that noise comes right at you through the dashboard. The 8.1 GM felt much more powerfull off the line and low end and felt better connected to the tranny. In the end I couldn't be happier I bought a new Duramax. All I can say is test drive the Ford and see for yourself. In my opinion their new gas engines are more complicated than they need to be and still don't make the power of the simpler pushrod GM motors. If you insist on the Ford the V10 probably is the way to go and was recommended to me over the Powerstroke by the Service manager of a Local Ford truck only dealer. Around here both SBC and Comcast have given up on and dumped the Powerstroke. Now all their new 450s and 550s are V10s.

i had a v10 in one of my work trucks and was pleased with the performance. the engine wasnt loud to me and pulled extremely well. only down side was it used alot of fuel. 10-12 mpg no matter what. another one to look at instead of the v10 is the 5.4 v8, great low end torque and good fuel mileage while pulling a trailer.

I've got a V10 Excursion and it does well. Doesn't pull nearly as well as the dmax but if you let it shift down on the hills it holds its own. I pull a 27 ft enclosed trailer and I get 10 mpg with the dmax and 7 with the V10 at 75 mph. If you slow down to 65 with the V10 it will jump to around 9 mpg pulling. Empty the V10 gets 13 - 15 mpg at 75. I don't think the V10 is any noisier than the dmax on the road, just a different sound.

MPG's are going to go way down with the V-10 for sure. My buddy tended to average about 8-10 around town with his doing landscaping. It was really bad when he was plowing, somewhere in the 5-6 range i think.

We've got a GMC 8.1-Ally SRW 3/4 ton and it definitly seems to be a much stronger and quieter engine, but this one burns 2-3 quarts of oil in between oil changes. It's a university vehicle so we just keep adding oil like they tell us to...

why is some smoke such a big deal especially with a tuner smoke should be expected. nothing is very comparable in gas mileage except other diesels and the only gas motor close in power is the 8.1, ive driven one and it was very nice.

We run two Ford v-10's each with about 50k miles. I have had no issues with them yet. They seem to have plenty of power for what we are doing (i.e. pulling 10-12k lbs) but the gas mileage does suck - loaded or not. We bought them because we were a start-up company and didn't have a lot of money. Not sure I would buy a diesel for my company's supers. The guys treat my equipment like ****.

thanks for all the replies but apparently the dealers in my area think my truck is only worth 2500 below blue book trade so i think i'll just keep her espesially now that injectors are warrented. i really didn't want to get rid of her anyway but just didn't want to have foot the bill for the new injectors when they went out

Not to start some chit, but I wholeheartedly disagree with you on the ford 5.4l. I had an Expedition with the 5.4 and it was a straight up dog. no grunt, nothing left when you want to pass at highway speeds.... It took everything it had to pull my 23' deck boat up some hills at the nearby lake. When you hammer it, it sounds like its really getting on it, but the power isn't there to match. jmho.

I ain't a chebby guy.... But if you want a gasser the 8.1 is the best thing going by far!!! Period!!! The ford shoots the spark plugs out of the heads and you have to heli coil them, the 5.4s and the 6.8s do this. And the hemis are gutless turds, they have no power at all. I went on a trip to hatfild-mccoy with my friend in his hemi towing 2 fourwheelers and it was all his truck could do to maintain 50 mph up the hills. The auto trans shifting in and out of overdrive and the whole bit. This was just two freaking 4wheelers. That thing was a joke.

My brother traded a stroker on an 01 v10 and my other brother and I laughed at him, asking him what the heck was he thinking. He said he didn't want to mess with diesel anymore. He owned the v10 for less than a year when he traded for another stroker. Bad mileage and seemed to be getting worse. If you hooked a trailer to it the mileage dropped, no matter what size of trailer or how it was loaded. He now ownes a 04 duramax and I don't see him going back to gas anytime soon.
The 5.4s and 6.8s do tend to throw spark plugs.

My buddy has an F-250 Super Duty V10... he has a slightly heavy foot and gets 7-8 MPG...

Pulled a 9-10K pound trailer fine but got even worse MPG then, around 5-6

I cringed every time he mashed the GO-pedal and asked how the heck he pays for gas?!?!

The other thing i noticed about his truck was the lack of room in the backseat (his was EXT cab). I've never been happy with the small Ford Interiors.

i have a v10 in my 96 e450 van and its a good engine, only clocked 78k on it so far but i have never had a single problem. however the gas mileage is horrible. depending on who drove it it got anywhere from 9-13mpg
