i saw some one the other day adding 2 quarts of tranny fluid to his fuel tank and then topping off with diesel. why was he doing this?

To add lubricity. If the vehicle was designed back in the higher sulfer fuel era, this was a somewhat common practice. I don't think it is required with todays trucks.

no, it was an 02 duramax. he was an old guy. maybe he is an old dog and is not aware of new tricks.

I did meet a guy that put in 2 quarts of transmission fluid after he filled up with unleaded. No joke, he ran out the whole tank. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pinch.gif

If you put transmission fluid in and get your fuel checked by the DOT, you might get in trouble. Red fuel not good.

Red Dye is to mark Farm fuel that has not paid state & fed road taxes.

my delaer fills the fuel filter up with tranny fluid before reinstalling it. Said it helped lubricate the engine better. I have seen it doen to prob 12 turcks and none have had ill affects

That is 'old school' and is not needed or helpful to your duramax. It is cheaper to fill up the fuel filter with diesel and less harmfull. If the situation was reversed and you were caught doing this GM would most likely void your warranty if you ever had fuel system problems. I would strongly recommend that you do not get that dealer to service your $50,000 truck.

i would not do it myself, the dealer is the only one close that has techs that deal with duramax engines on a regualr basis as there commerciasl truck center is huge. I try not to take it to a dealer period, but when i have to i use them cause they do the work fast and right. i agree though, i do nto think it is needed in these newer type engines.

I saw a guy do the same thing, I asked him about this and he told me it was an old truckers trick to give them better mialage and performance. He was driving a Dodge, I wouldn't do to my truck. He was an old trucker and still used what was available to them back in the day. Now we have additaves where we we only use a few ounces. By the way he had 300,000 on his truck and told me it ran great and swore that the tranny fluid in the tank was the reason why his truck ran so good. I still won't do it.

I have heard people say that it cuts down on carbon deposits.

In the old days they used to get rid of the drain oil in the fuel tanks of over the road trucks.

Transmission fluid in duramax fuel system/time=new injectors

Keep that in mind.

Stick with a reputable diesel additive like Stanadyne you will be much better off

Is that a safe additive? My dealer warned of additives that don't work well with the dmax fuel filter and said they recomend no additive at all.

Trapman,

I have never heard of issues with Standadyne & Duramx fuel filter. Standadyne is one of the biggest in the business.

GM recommends Stanadyne or Racor additives...

Hey Bill, are you still running the 2 stroke oil or was that someone else? If so how many miles have you run it? Mike-

Mike,

Sorry I didn't see this sooner... Yes, I add a dash (2-4oz) of TCW3 2-cycle oil at each fill-up along with Stanadyne Performance Formula. Been doing it since the truck was new ... currently at 30.5kmi. I also ran the same in my 98 6.5TD..
