: Another noise, is this normal?

I have been hearing this noise for the last couple of weeks and was wondering if this is a normal noise.

It sounds like it is coming from the transfer case and emits a humming noise that is more apparant at low speeds but still exists and higher speeds just harder to hear. Yesterday I was pulling away from a stop light going 30mph at 1500 rpm and could really hear it. It sounds like a flat tire. I am fearing it is the convertor since it seems to go away as soon as I let off the throttle and the convertor disengages.

I have the rubber floor in my truck so it may transmit this noise louder than normal. The noise seems to be coming from right under the drivers side floorboard. Is this a 4x4 noise?

BTW...my truck is completely stock and have 4,000 miles on her.

Have you been 4 wheeling lately?

I wonder now, I had a new '97 Tahoe that every once in a while after being in 4x4, when I would press the 2wd button, it would say I was in 2wd, but I would get the same noise you are having.I would have to back up around 50 ft. to get the thing to disengage the front end. Not saying this is what is happening to you, just a guess. Edited by: coolbeans

I have a manual 4x lever in mine....but it does sound like the hubs are still engaged, but not driving the wheels. It sounds like snow tires but not as loud.

I just dont remember the sound new... but there are a lot of things that I notice now that I didn't on my test drive.

The hubs do not unlock like conventional 4x4's. There is a central disconnect in the front axle.

Is this a normal noise? I guess there is no reason to back up after 4x to disengage the hubs.

No reason to back up. If you are moving just let it coast a bit with no throttle to unload the disconnect.
