I know it has been debated before but what is the current thoughts on how much power a stock allison can take with out damage? Thanks, Mike-

With an LB7 about 90 over stock safely. 125 is definately pushing it but many are getting away with it. Although they are likely still doing damage. Edited by: Max Power

My feeling is if it aint broke, dont fix it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif Meaning why spend $2500 to beef up the tranny when in the future if you have to spend $2500 to fix it. Am I wrong to think that? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gifBen

To a point yes, but would you rather spend 2500$ or $3000+ cause you tore up all the clutch packs and stuff. I beat on my stock tranny for a good while, and it took a lot of abuse. But, you cant beat it being able to hold. as tomac say Lock it and Rock it!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

If that's true, why do worry?

When I can see 45% to 50% slip in level 3 on my attitude.....

I need a tranny upgrade, what are the lottery numbers tonight????

Your gonna pay now or pay later, but once your hurt it, its ability to hold power goes down.... then it gets to be a neccesity rather then a luxery (sp on both them big words?)

If you dont have the coin, start saving while your abusing..hehe

2500.00 will get you a Transgo shift kit and single disc converter installed, nothing else. If you keep beating on it and do more damage , you will pay more. I suggest being kinder to your Ally till you upgrade it.

I agree, but it still causes some concern.

Haven't put it on level 4 or 5 yet.... I would like to visit Mike first...Edited by: Blinky

Mike L,

Right you are! I rebuilt the TH350 in my old faithful '75 K20 Chevy 4x4 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Broken Heart.gif, back in gulp!, 1981http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ouch.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif, using the GM Overhaul Manual. I am thinking about doing the Alli after the 36,000 mile warranty is uphttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Question.gif, using the book you sent and the Transgo Kit Intsructions.

Any special tools needed, such as a dial indicator? I remember having the use one to check the proper number of shims in the TH350.

Mike, we are gonna be beggin for money on the street corners pretty soon with the quality of that Transgo book. As long as they buy the parts from ushttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

At JK's open house I did a Suncoast L3 upgrade in front of everybody, answering questions and showing how/why/what along the way. I think most everybody liked it and it helped them decide if they wanted to tackle it themselves. Of course, having made 1000 mistakes on these before, I can make it look fairly easy now.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Erik,

I don't think you need concern yourself with that http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif I took a pile of pictures while you were orchestraiting and don't know for sure what half of them were trying to illustrate http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif One of the guys suggested we mix them up and try, just try, to put them back in the correct sequence http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif I do believe everyone there will attest to you making the magic look easy http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Eric

You should have been around when we were developing the Shift Kit..................... 1000 mistakes ......... I only wish. We got it down to R&R transmission make changes and have it back together for testing in about 2 hours. The record thrash was 45 minutes to change the TC. It was a 2wd but we did wear the bolts out along the way!

Steve, I dont envy you developmental guys at all in those circumstances. I can just imagine how many times it took just to get the C2 return springs just righthttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

So my question is: If it costs so much to get the level III kit, for example (I believe I remember seeing someone quote $3200.00 installed, which is a great price), then why wouldn't you just buy the Suncoast already prepped level IV at $3600.00. It seems like installing an entire transmission would save considerably on labor. Am I missing something big here? What is the difference between their advertised level IV and the level III kit?

If I decide to keep this truck, one of these options will most likely be in my future.

Thanks,
Dennis

Suncoast level 3 installed for 3200.00 is a little different than Level 4 at 3600.00 plus instalation as far as price. If you get the right shop to install it you can go play without worry. It is the same thing.

You need to be careful.........some of these "PRICES" are just the Tranny and no Converter.................

If you look at the Web sites you will see they offer different combo's.

There has only been one reply to the original question. MaxPower said "90hp safely and 120hp is pushing it". Is this accurate? I've got a Hypertech and have it set on 50hp for fear of toasting my trans. Can I safely run 90hp and also tow with that setting? I ran it on 90hp for a short time and couldn't believe the difference, heck it even feels good at 50hp. So....... whats the verdit?

90 is fine for every day. I wouldn't tow with it though. I would use the 50 for towing and make sure you have some gages or you'll burn it up. Super Diesel

blinky says he see up to 65% without the t-converter locked is this not normal? the only time I look at mine is after lock up when it should say 0.0%. should we worry what the attitude shows when the converter is unlocked. I usually see numbers in the 35 to 50 % range in normal driving until around 50 mph when the converter locks.
