: 758 miles and 3 gal left!
wagonwheeler 10-04-2006, 12:59 AM Travelling for work and ran from Valdosta Georgia to Lynchburg Va on less than a tank of fuel...758 miles and 39 gallons! (Actually 39.2 on my ticket, but I ran it out the neck and onto the ground because I didn't really think it was possible I was under 40 gallons...)
So I averaged 19.4 ish. I was quite happy with that! :D
19.2 was my previous 75mph average (repeatable) pre-chip/exhaust. Then post chip/exhaust I took a dive to 16.7 and 17.7 at 70mph -:t ...
This run included a detour in Atlanta monkeying around in street traffic for about an hour  (with a good bit of hot-rodding and bullying my way around) in an effort to find my father in law and drop some keys off to him, then detour for Bass Pro and REI in Charlotte (waste of time), and headed onward to Lynchburg. Running 75mph pretty steady - sometimes 70, sometimes 85... .
Gonna top it off an head home tomorrow and see how she goes again!
Drove a friends CC 2500 LLY today over in Roanoke. Man that thing will rattle your kidneys! Stock suspension and STIFF! No thanks! I'd have to soften that thing up somehow to drive it every day - made my old Land Cruiser feel like a Cadillac. The power was sure sweet, though.

Great milage!!! :D
What was the culprit that made you loose milage initially?
wagonwheeler 10-04-2006, 10:57 AM Great milage!!! :D

I dunno what it was. I track mileage every time I top off so the story is an ongonig one. I kept thinking it was due to running 4-5psi boost cruising the interstate, but I was pretty much running that this time.
I did find a dead OPS recently and perhaps it died just before that last trip and my IP was having to suck fuel...this was most likely the culprit as it's the biggest change I can think of.
I was running the factory vac boost system for the 16.7 and 17.7 tanks as well. I'm running a manual TM on this trip. I only had it set to about 10 psi max on the way up. I've run it up some to about 12/13psi which will raise my cruising speed boost somewhat as well. I'll have to see on the way home what that does to my MPG.
My absolute worst mileage - which is in town with some towing, some powerbraking  , lots of 'listen to the exhaust and turbo', lots of 'watch that boost gauge', has been 13.2 mpg.
I hope all is well and that maybe the OPS was the sole reason.

schiker 10-04-2006, 11:03 AM Yeah recap for us please.
Were n't you trying to compare max-E torq and TM to stock program and validate if you did not put your foot into it a diesel should not use more fuel regardless of program (within reason)????
I just did injectors and turbo master too early to tell if fuel milage is up or down.
cnvrt2cummins 10-04-2006, 11:12 AM I am not trying to steal any thunder but I drove from columbus Indiana to Lake city FL on one tank of 100%SVO but I was bone dry when I got to the next dumpster of svo.

Man that's awesome! What size tank are you running? How do your MPG numbers work out?
I've always figured that I could run just over 850 miles if I was willing to run 65mph (which gave me a repeatable 21.2mpg in the past) but with the recent changes I'm having to regroup and develop new repeatable numbers...still in the works.

Tmi_13 10-04-2006, 12:02 PM Why do these trucks have so different mileage, I hardly get 13 mpg at 70 mph on freeway. It doesnt smoke or anything when driving, . Is the axles really that much heavyer in 2500??
chevydiesel 10-04-2006, 01:39 PM Hmm, usually a increase in MPG is seen with the Heath chip, at least that's what I've noticed. Lower EGT's on flat cruise than stock.
redoctober 10-04-2006, 02:05 PM my 3500 consistently gets 14-15.

As for the reason mine is different you can look at my sig as well as my garage and you might find 6 little reasons as to why my mileage is different along with the fact I have the 6-lug half ton due to my suburban previously being a gasses and I have put 3.42:1 gear ratio in my truck.
I did find a dead OPS recently and perhaps it died just before that last trip and my IP was having to suck fuel...this was most likely the culprit as it's the biggest change I can think of.
What is an OPS? Cause my mileage sucks compared to yours and many others. How long ago did you change your injectors? And with which ones?
schiker 10-04-2006, 05:16 PM OPS - oil pressure switch. ie his lift pump wasn't working. w/o circulating fuel IP gets hotter and so does fuel. Warmer fuel is less dense and such has less energy also loses some of its lubricity at elevated temps. The DS IP's like an excess of fuel to circulate and cool the IP. I feel its important enough to recommend a fuel pressure gauge to monitor it daily.
Lots of differences in trucks from reading DRW get 14-16 mpg and SRW get 16-20ish. Biggest influence is go pedal and driving sayle then a whole bunch of other things add up to contribute.
dhjunkie 10-04-2006, 08:41 PM amazing milage.. I had an addage when going on trips that rest stops were timed with fuel ups. with the blazer that equated to about 1 3/4 hours or 210 miles whichever came first. When I flew up to Oregon to gain possesion of the suburban I made the drive plan home on the same basis of the blazer. Boy I really made the misses upset when she had to go and there wasn't any fuel showing consumed! First thought was "crap the fuel guage doesn't work" but then it began to drop a bit. long story short I drove from Portland,Oregon to 100 miles south of Sacramento, Ca on a tank of fuel. I was stoked beyond belief with the milage, thinking I was going to cut my fuel bills in half. Then came the spike in diesel prices :(
caissiel 10-04-2006, 09:36 PM Well I have owned my 98 Chev for 8 years and got 16MPG (Imp} and Idling was hell on fuel. and after working on my brake lines the truck now does 21MPG (Imp). ( I am Canadian ). The only thing I did to the truck to make this change is that I replaced a brake line by the tank and had to wiggle the Fuel lines to pass the new brake line. I feel my return line had an obstruction and when I moved it it must cleared the line. I returned my truck to the dealer at 3 different occasion when new and told them I thought the return line was plugged or restricted. According to what I experienced its the only logical solution. Before I could not run my truck slow or Idle it was Hell on fuel. Now I get 21MPG at any speed from 10 to 70 MPH. Its fun again to drive a diesel. Just like the 90 6.2L I had before .
wagonwheeler 10-04-2006, 11:08 PM What is an OPS? Cause my mileage sucks compared to yours and many others. How long ago did you change your injectors? And with which ones?
Remember that I'm 2wd and 3.42's.
I've not done injectors yet. PO had not done them either to my knowledge - and I have talked w/ the diesel mechanic who maintainted the truck since new. Engine is bone stock - original timing set, original injectors. PO had dealer replace IP, PMD, LP at 201K.

BunGhoLeo 10-05-2006, 05:29 PM Whew, wish my 1996 K2500 Suburban got that milage. I've got the 3.73's. That first tank had 107 miles of towing 7000lbs so i should be able to get close to 16mpg unloaded, the second tank was all towing thru southern kentucky mountains.
Date Milage Gallons Price Total Miles MPG MP$
2006-09-14 261,298 28.158 $2.599 $73.18
2006-09-29 261,802 35.327 $2.339 $82.63 504 14.27 6.10
2006-10-01 262,120 28.307 $2.459 $69.61 318 11.23 4.57
viking 10-05-2006, 06:14 PM Unloaded - 2000 rpm / 70 mph, 3:73 / 4 wd , 20-21 mpg.
BunGhoLeo 10-05-2006, 06:33 PM Humm, mines turning 1750 at 55mph, and 2000 at 65mph. Wonder if there using differant gearing in the transmissions.
Pillow 10-05-2006, 08:08 PM BunGhoLeo, sounds like you have a 4.10 rearend. Same as me.
I get 17 mixed driving pretty constantly. When the vacuum pump was broken 16.
BunGhoLeo 10-05-2006, 11:16 PM Acordding to the build sheet i should have the 3.73's. I will crawl underneath it tomorrow and double check. To me it doesn't pull like 4.10's, but the diff tag won't lie.
wagonwheeler 10-06-2006, 12:24 PM Well, on the return we ran a little faster. 78-80mph mostly w/ some faster... 19.00mpg
Glad to see it.
I'll force myself to do a 65mph run and see if I can beat 21.2mpg - my best to date.
Also checked my odometer and it was within 2 tenths in 30 miles (and I don't think the GPS calculates for elevation - just horizontal miles covered). So my odometer is within 5 miles in a 758 mile run.
Co-worker broke off the inside passengers door handle just as we arrived to town...:banghead: And it's not like they're lightweight flimsy plastic - they're actually pretty stout.
Already ordered a replacement online - looks like some drilling and riveting is in order.

Chicago TDP 10-06-2006, 12:29 PM Last long highway trip I was at 70 MPH and got 19.5 mpg with my snowmobiles behind me. Just kept it in cruise for 7 hours and stopped to take a wizz once in a while.

Just to add, I'm running 265's and a well waxed bug deflector.
