I know this probably has been discussed before, but how will short trips effect a diesel?. I drive 8 miles each way to work and plow snow in the winter. Is the diesel OK with this. Will there be heating problems? Cooling problems? I am in the process of shopping around and I am getting conflicting reports. Most people tell me that I won't have heat until I get to work. True? Thanks in advance...

Get a remote starter and a high idel switch and be done with it. Oh, I would suggest some really nice batteries, I have the yellow top Optima's.

Well I do the same thing as you. In the winter I don't really have much heat when I get to work although I drive a shorter distance. It takes a long time to warm these trucks up and you have to work them to warm them up. I have heated seats, a remote start and high idle so it doesn't bother me much. You could always look into a webesto heater or similar. Edited by: Max Power

My problem is that it is garaged. Or will this help me? I will be getting a remote start with it, but I will use it when I leave work.

How about plugging in the block heater since it's in a garage already?

With the block heater plugged in I have almost instant heat especially if its not extramly cold. Being in a garage will help. With the winter front on it dosnt take too long to warm up. Dont run with a winter front on with the plow though.

I find my block heater doesn't make much difference in warm up time. It will only reach a certain temperature no matter how long it idles. I find that it's not enough. But then again, I really only notice it when its -25 or below. -40 is really bad. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

The heated seats in these trucks are the quickest I have ever seen. I can feel the heat within the first mile. This along with the cold weather front, and you will be fine. I also use a block heater on mornings when its below 20 degrees. On mornings like this, you will still get to work before it is fully warmed up, but it will start better, blow heat from the vents sooner, and probably last longer using the block heater.

I use the winter cover here in CA in the winter. Dosent seem to make much of a difference.
Ive used it well into the 60's, and nothing really happens.
