: Performance Box on a ZF/6
luvthesmellofdiesel 06-22-2004, 09:53 PM I have an '02 LB7 motor with a ZF/6 tranny. I have been running a Quad135 box, DPP 4" exhaust, 265/75 Nitto Terra Grapplers. Before the new tires and exhaust, my truck seemed pretty well behaved at all levels on the box, the higher the setting, the smoother it was.
After I put the tires and exhaust on, I have since noticed a very strong surge at 1800 rpms and the jerking is pretty bad at low rpm's especially when cold, worse than I have ever seen before.
I am currently driving w/o the box (just tire size setting 0). I like the smooth shifting and can't stand the jerking I get when hitting the surge area every time I go to shift. The truck has never acted this bad before, I can't figure out what's going on. No codes, it runs great on setting 0 or stock but gutless of course. :-(
I am interested to know what other folks who have the LB7 and ZF/6 setup run for power boxes and how they like them. I am probably going to look for another (non-pressure type) power box soon in order to get away from all the surge and jerking (if one exists), I can't stand it anymore.
Apparently I have the latest tune (Feb 17 2004) on the box. The surge and jerking are worse on the lower settings. The 135 setting is the best, but it's difficult to shift it smoothly and consistently.
I don't want to sacrafice driveability in order to have the extra power. Is this possible on a ZF/6 truck?
Thanks,
Tim
mannytranny 06-22-2004, 11:47 PM Ive been through this with the Predator. I had to raise holy hell, but I finally got them to make a custom tune. Less than 50 horse, but it is smooth, and is finally what I want.
I hated the jumpy pedal too.
bigsky1 06-23-2004, 08:18 AM I had the Quad 110 and loved the power but it too had the surge. Right around 2000 rpm it relly came on strong and when shifting in the lower gears the surge sucked. I have now went to the Juice/Attitude and it is smooth yet still strong. No major surge at all. Plus I love the adjustability (on the fly) and the built in gauges!!
My 2 cents,
SteveEdited by: bigsky1
luvthesmellofdiesel 06-23-2004, 10:27 AM Doesn't the Juice/Attitude raise fuel-rail pressure? It sounds like I might hafta go for one of these if it doesn't. I considered the Banks, but it raises fuel rail pressure as well I think.
Can I hook my existing DiPricol EGT probe to the Attitude? I am not drilling another hole in the manifold. If the wires are tee'd can it cause the gauges to read incorrectly? I already had to splice the wire that came with the gauges to add about 3 ft to reach the gauge cluster. For all I know, the gauge as it is may not be accurate.
Thanks,
Tim
ratlover 06-23-2004, 11:03 AM Juice dont raise fuel pressure. I like mine on my alli
dont know about your particular guage but many say running 2 guages off the same pyro is ok. You could stick another pyro into the bottom of the driverside manifold?
jjgmc 06-23-2004, 06:39 PM I think I would start putting money away for a decent clutch this dual mass is a pos. That is my plan before I buy edge comp
luvthesmellofdiesel 06-24-2004, 02:01 PM I'll get the clutch & flywheel when mine goes out. Mine hasn't gone out yet, working on it though... ;-)
I talked with Matt at Edge and he said he thought it would work good on a ZF/6 and not to tee the EGT probe to both gauges, just leave it off the attitude I guess.
He also said an Edge dealer might be willing to let me try one out before I buy. Has anyone ever done this or know of anyone who sells em that might let me do that or is this something that just isn't done? If I could try one out before I bought it, that would be a good thing.
I need to prove to myself on my own truck that it provides smooth shifting and the power before I am going to buy another box. I don't like the idea of buying one then returning if I don't like it approach either except I guess it would boil down to the same thing.
Thanks,
Tim
bigsky1 06-26-2004, 08:39 AM Tim,
Find one (edge/attitude) to try. You will like it. When I first got mine I was a little depressed because I was getting used to the Major surge of my quad box. The attitude was so smooth it felt like nothing was happening. Absolutely no surge at all. Now after using it for a while I love it. Smooth as stock, No abnoxious knocking, gauges that work and power to pass tourists like you are on a motorcycle. Plus and this is what I like best is with the push of a button you can go from any level of power to any other level on the fly. Anyway find one to try because I know what you mean about trying it on your own truck. After rereading this I kind of sound like I'm selling these, trust me I am not. I am pleased with this product and just wish to tell you. If I didn't like it, I would be just as quick to tell you that. Someone help Tim out and lend him an ATTITUDE.
Good luck,
Steve
Camstyn 06-28-2004, 04:23 PM Juice/Attitude, love it, no complaints.
luvthesmellofdiesel 06-30-2004, 10:35 PM Well, I decided to go with the Van Aaken 90/150 box. Just got it tonight in the mail. Put her on and tested it out a little. So far it seems pretty good. It's definitely smoother, quieter, and better behaved. I'll know a lot more after a few days...
I looked at the dyno curves between the Edge/Juice and the VA box and it seemed to me that the VA had a more linear curve and started much lower than the Edge/Juice curve. But, it was hard to compare really.
Thanks,
Tim
bigsky1 07-01-2004, 08:47 AM Best of Luck!! Let us know what you think after you have had a little time to play with it. The power is addictive.

CPMac 07-01-2004, 11:41 AM I bet you will be very happy with your decision.
brewster29 07-02-2004, 02:25 PM The local diesel performance place keeps a loaner on hand. Pretty smart 'cause you ARE going to buy it after you try it. Love mine with the Allison. Very impressed with Juice/Attitude package. Install of module about 5 minutes, Attitude wiring, mounting and pyro probe install was about one hour. Hardest part was those freaking plastic fender rivets. No, maybe it will be explaining to my wife just why I smoked the tranny. Anyway, it delivers the goods just as promised and that is a rarity.
luvthesmellofdiesel 07-02-2004, 02:48 PM Went to lunch today with a co-worker, went to leave to come back to work and the truck started acting REALLY weird. It idled just fine but when I went to pull out on the 4-lane (turning left of course), no power, wanted to die, scared the crap out of me especially with people coming at you around 60MPH slamming on their brakes and you're a sitting duck in the middle of the road! What the f$%k is this!!!!!!!!!!!
I finally got it out of the road under it's on "power" and pulled back into the parking lot. When I step on the gas (even in neutral), it'll almost die immediately (like it's not getting fuel) and then it "catches", makes an obnoxious loud injector noise (sounds like the no pilot injection noise) and them seems fine as long as I hold the pedal there. I let off on it, let it idle for a second, and I can do it again, same deal. Not good...
I turned the truck off, popped the hood messed with the wire connectors (just wiggled them a little), got back in, fired it up and all seems fine. So what the he*ll is going on here?
This sounds a *lot* like the bursting thing I have read about but I am sitting in a parking lot in neutral, apply a little throttle and get this? Anyone seen this before? I am thinking it has to do with the electrical connectors but I am not sure.
I'm leaving in 2 hrs for a trip across Texas for the weekend. I guess if it gives me fits, I'll simply unhook it, but I sure would like to know what's going on. No codes BTW, at least none that light the SES light anyway.
Brand new fuel filters as of last weekend, it's highly unlikely the cause IMHO.
Are the connectors as hokie on the Edge Juice as they are on the VA? The wires between the connectors are so short on the VA it was difficult to connect the larger connector (on the bottom) and the connector wad is sitting and wobbling together nearly on top of the radiator hose. Is the way it's supposed to be? I used wire ties to secure it the best I could but it's not a great setup IMHO. I am making an assumption that it's an electrical connector issue I am having, perhaps it's not. Help Please!
Thanks,
Tim
brewster29 07-02-2004, 07:10 PM Sorry, I would not want to diagnose by e-mail but can offer this:
The EDGE box has beefy connectors that plug directly into the engine bus. They appear identical to the GM connectors ("should" be OK) and there is enough length that you can mount the module either on top of or to the side of the driver's side fuse box. I mounted mine under the fender brace on a flat on the side of the fuse box closest to the firewall.
Good luck and maybe you can tell me why the fit always hits the shan just when you gotta go somewhere???
Kennedy 07-02-2004, 11:16 PM The first thing to look at when plugging in a module like the VA, Juice, TST, or Banks is the pins in the connectors. They all use the same connectors, and in some cases, the pins can recede. If you are not careful, they can even get bent when plugging in.
Now the turning left dying thing has been brought up before by others. Not sure if they were stock or not...
Heck I have even heard one case where the LH turn signal makes both signals operate only with a module (not VA) hooked up
luvthesmellofdiesel 07-05-2004, 11:00 PM Ok, so after 1500 miles of driving in the last 4 days, everything was A ok. I like the box, seems strong, and definitely not surgy.
Thanks,
Tim
