I ordered 3 fuel filters, but received the wrong ones. They are for the LB7 not the longer ones for the LLY. I was told they will work, do I send them back or just use them???????????

Use them. I don't think you can get the longer replacement ones yet. Inside they are identicle.

I just changed the filter out on my new LLY (830 miles) just so I could see the difference for myself. I cut it open and the internals are the very same. Don't know way they made the can longer. I put the regular LB7 back on with no worries.

I thought I had heard somewhere that the LLY filter could be used on the LB7 but the LB7 filter could not be used on the LLY or maybe it was the other way around ???

No reason not to use the LB7 filter. Again the only difference is the length of the can.

In addition to the can being longer, I believe the actual filter element is longer also (3/4 of an inch). If you change it routinely, it should not make a difference.

I would repalce the LLY filter with the one that is made for the LLY. With all the injector problems GM has had who is to say the micron rating for the LLY is the same. It could very well be a 2 Micron filter as opposed to the 10 Micron that the LB7 used. I believe that Racor makes the GM filter and they say there is no diffrence. I wouldn't take that to the bank though. There must be some reason GM changed it. To me it isn't worth putting an LB7 filter on an LLY. I have a 43,000 dollar truck and I am quibbling over a filter. I don't think so. I use the genuine OEM filters.

what is the recommended mileage or time to replace fuel filters? Is it every time you do the oil filter, sooner or later? Thanks.

The filter used on the LB7 is a 4 micron filter (98% efficiency at that particle size). This is per a Racor tech several years ago.

I spoke with A Racor tech today about fuel filters. He told me that Racor is the OEM supplier for the GM duramax and that the LLY fuel filter has a 2 micron rating. He also said that it should be drained every oil change and replaced once a year or every 500 hrs. The way I use my truck I think replacement every second oil change should be sufficient.

The 2 micron rating is only in the 80% or less range. In other words it will capture 2 micron particles but not all of them.Edited by: hoot

I'll supplement what Hoot mentions above. When talking about the micron rating of a filter, you also have to mention the efficiency of the filter (preferably in the same sentence). So, while the Racor tech was correct in saying the filter has a rating of 2 micron, he should have also mentioned that it is only 88% efficient at 2 microns (if my memory serves me correctly).


With respect to changing fuel filters and mileage intervals, I would say it is situational dependent. Over the last couple of years, people have been posting pictures of fuel filter media after XXXXX number of miles. The results vary widely. I have seen filters at 10K miles that hardly look used (good fuel supply) and I have seen fuels filters at 10K miles that look totally trashed. It all depends on the quality of the fuel you are buying. I would leans towards every 10,000 miles. At the fuel filter change, cut the filter open and take a look at the media. This would give you an idea of where you stand and one could adjust the interval from there.

I bought three filters from gmpartsdirect and they are they correct "longer" filter! $17 each.
