: EGT gauge
BOOST 10-01-2006, 06:55 PM Alright well i finally bought an EGT gauge. It's an autometer ultra lite carbon fiber, just like whats in my avatar but the Pyro.
Now, when i go to do the install i will be removing the manifold. I know it's not what everyone is doing but i'd rather be safe then sorry. So, which side is the best? In theory it should not make a difference but i just wanted to get your opinions. The driver side is a bit tougher to remove but it is the closest to the driver side firewall and would make for a cleaner install. Passenger side is easier to remove but then i will have the temp probe line running across. HMMMM, what do you think? Or, how did you do yours?
duramaxdavid 10-01-2006, 07:29 PM I think most of us put it in the passenger side.
trudynosports 10-01-2006, 07:55 PM Mine is on the passenger side for ease of installation.
duramax/a 10-01-2006, 08:46 PM Passenger side. Drilled the hoot way on the truck. Small hole in passenger floor board, rubber grommet. Up the A piller with the wires to the overhead console.
addicted 10-01-2006, 09:38 PM I would agree, The passenger side is the easiest. In my opinion
GlenRoseFireFighter 10-02-2006, 11:14 AM no need to remove manifold...just put some grease on your tap and all of the filings will stick to that. Or, to add safety, if you have an air hose, have a friend blow the air hose at the tap while tapping...this will remove most of the filings and the grease will get the rest. I have mine installed on the passenger side.
F-16 Crew Dawg 10-02-2006, 11:58 AM I did the grease thing then I also ran a small magnet (little pen looking one) down into the hole. I kept putting it in and cleaning it off until I didn't get any metal shaving on the tip. But if you still want to remove the manifold, I would do the Rt side. Good luck, I hope it doesn't leak after.
BOOST 10-02-2006, 10:55 PM cool, so it looks like the passenger side is the way to go which is what i was hoping for. I'm going to still remove the manifold because i really don't want to miss anything.... It will only add maybe 30 minutes to the install.
Now i was going to go with a pillar set up with a boost gauge but now i'm rethinking that... i am thinking about puting the gauge right in the square next to the radio. I think it will fit nicely with a fabbed aluminum piece holding it in place. Anybody else tuck theirs in a spot other then the pillar or sunglass holder?
myojunk 10-02-2006, 11:04 PM i used the grease, the little extending pen magnet, and a shop vac. im pretty sure i got it all out. ;) passenger side is the way to go. or you could buy the bd manifold, i believe it is already drilled and tapped.
Tom2500HD 10-02-2006, 11:20 PM Boost, I'm like you. I felt more comfortable removing the manifold. It is pretty thin, so be careful when you tap the hole. Also, one bolt on the manifold will be difficult to replace and torque. It is the manifold to pipe bolt on the engine block side.
I ran wiring through "stick-on" plastic cable clips stuck to the top edge of the firewall, just under the weather seal.
If you need to know more from someone who has been down the manifold removal road, just ask.
txguppy 10-03-2006, 10:40 AM Dude, you could really save yourself some time by using the "Hoot Method." By removing teh manifold, I believe you will be more prone to potential problems: leaks, stripped nuts, broken gaskets, not to mention skinned knuckles. :D I've done 3, and it's so easy. I haven't heard of anyone having any problems by using the "Hoot Method." :ro)
Tutts 10-04-2006, 12:41 PM The Hoot method is the way to go. The exhaust from the running engine blows everything out the hole with no problems (just make sure that you wear safety glasses!). I bought some split loom and ran the leads across the firewall just underneath the weatherstripping, and manufactured a clip to hold it to an existing bolt that I found there. Removing the fender liner actually took longer than drilling and tapping the manifold. Just make sure that when you tap it, you don't go too far, as the tap is a pipe thread tap (tapered), and if you go too far, the probe will not tighten before it bottoms out.

Go to the Edge website and download the installation instructions for their controller. It shows where we put them using their products.

rgillar 10-04-2006, 11:33 PM Used the previously mentioned "Hoot Method" No issues. Daunting at first drilling into the manifold but no big deal.
One thing, if you drill a pilot hole first, with the engine running, grease will fly off the drill bit and into your face (lesson learned)
