I've got an 03 Duramax, approx 38K, Today started experiencing a strange popping noise coming from the center of the dash, sounds as if a relay is opening/closing. It's been happening off and on all day and the noise is pretty loud... I'm on the road with my 5er and about 2K miles from home. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this anomaly or if anyone has any suggestions. Would like to get back home before taking it in, but am somewhat concerned that I could get stranded in the middle of the boondocks............Any help appreciated..

My Mom's 05' suburban is doing the same thing right now. We took it in and they said it is normal; I doubt that because it just started at 15,000 miles. But I do know exactly what you are talking about Otto. It seems like there is an elctrical connection that is loose and doesn't make very good contact. It happens mostly over bumps and is a clicking sound. Just in case someone chimes in, this is not the steering shaft that we are talking about. Let me know what you find out if you do Otto, or anyone else for that matter.
Thanks for the response Codythom, I know it's not related to steering, since I hear the noise at idle and no movement of the vehicle or the steering. We've tried turning things on/off, turn the engine off, etc..
I can turn the key to on and get the noise, start the engine, get the noise, then after a while it will go away and then later come on again. To me it sounds like a relay opening and closing. When I get home and if it's still making the noise I will take it in to my dealer.. To me it's another one of the queer electrons and if it's not making the noise the dealer will never figure it out. It's not the first one of these issues I've experienced with this vehicle..... Thanks for your input....

It is a relay of some sort, right in the center of the dash location is where the noise seems to come from? Do a search for noise in the center of dash, it will provide you with what you may be looking for.
