I just received a new GMC 2500 HD LLY/Allison 4wd. I followed the break in procedure and now have 700 miles on it. On Saturday I was at a stop light next to an Oldsmobile Alero. Well as you can figure out we both jumped on it and he kicked my A$$. I was very dissapointed. I have heard a lot of people say just how fast a DMAX is. Is there something wrong with my truck or do I need to just give it time?

Maybe the 4000 lb weight difference had something to do with it. It needs time and if ya add some type of fueling box the outcome would be different I promise.

I know the weight difference is obvious but I have a buddy w/ a 5.3 gasser that I think would give me a run for my money. I know they are not made for racing but I just thought it would do a lot better.

I picked up my 2004 dmax on friday afternoon, after i passed 500 miles on saterday night, i couldnt resist the temptation to burn a honda civic(it was lowered, racing rims, exhaust ext.) but as the light hit green the car left for a second, then my turbo spooled up and i was gone, the honda was screaming through gears but wasnt moving any closer to mehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif.....then a dodge 1500 was messin with me in town, rolled that poor sucker too....but thats my two claimed kills so far....

Bring on that 5.3 Gasser.... I give a 5.7 Supercharged Furd Lightning a Hell of a run...then I run out of tranny. An Alero, would get detailed with black soot and road debris from my 285 BFG's. Edited by: easymon4u

<DIV>I can see you have juiced your D-max. I would like to keep the warranty for now. I am talking about a bone stock D-max with the exception of 285's.</DIV>

Have the Alero tow 15,000lbs and see who kicks a$$ then!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

A bone stock 5.3 would beat a bone stock duramax. These trucks are fast though, for a diesel anyways. The reason a lot of people talk about how fast their trucks are is because of how easily the duramax can be modified. There is something truely impressive about 9,000+ lb trucks runnin 12's.

Don't drive it like an ol'lady and it will respond better... tranny shifts like it is driven most of the time. You need to "keep it in shape" if you want to run it once in awhile.

you've got maybe a 3.30 gear, and alot of unsprung wieght with those 285's...tough to get moving! That's one reason I won't run more than a 265, anything taller/heavier seriously handicaps these trucks off the line w/o mods! Edited by: Rippem

Building some boost would have helped too.

700 miles? Broke in? I just passed 8,000 miles and it runs better everyday! Next time build some boost at the line, then let er rip. My wifes '01 cougar G-tech's at 16.0 and I left her behind once, my truck is bone stock, but she drives like an OL, and the 16.0 wasn't with her driving--in fact she doesn't even know I have a G-tech! LOL! She also wants a diesel now!--wants one of those new jeep liberty diesels! I gotta get the skinny on those things.

One other thing that might help you when coming out of the hole at a dead-dig, the two kills I got with mine was just leaning into the throttle. Don't drop the hammer like in a gasser. By the time I was at 3/4 pedal both times the other guys was 3 to 4 links behind. And the butt-dyno feels GREAT http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I have run a couple of those punk looking riceburners and I crushed them with my stock duramax. Build some boost and it will show.

I think the problem is that everyone is looking for instant head snaping torque. That isn't going to happen. It takes a couple of seconds to get the turbo spooled up. I agree with Mike_in Wisc if you just mat it at the line you won't get the response you will if you just gradually lean into it. Just keep leaning on the throttle harder. the response is awsome! You aren't going to get them at the line you are just going to out pull them. And who care about those POS riceburners any way they will be sitting in the bone yard with the lower end blown out of them just about the time your LLY starts getting broken in.

I did gently lean into the throttle. I am very pleased with the truck and I know it will serve it purpose by pulling a trailer up a helluva mountain so I can go bowhunting and get there fast. I just always heard people say how fast the D-max was and how it could smoke anything out there, that information I found out was just a bunch of b/s. It's not the fastest truck on the roadhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif.... maybe the best truck on the roadhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif. That I can agree with.

Your right a stock Duramax is not the fastest truck on the road but one with a box is pretty close. Bet every one of those people talking about fast Duramax's had a box on it. Big improvementhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.

The stock truck put's out about 240-260 hp to the wheels, but when you look at the weight penalty it makes a diff. Plus the truck's pull better from a rolling start since the weight is moving already.

Buy a box like Edge or TTS or whichever you like with at least 100 hp and you won't be able to wipe the smile off your face.

And then you can go look for that alero again, slap him silly, throw him on a car trailer behind your truck, tow him to the car wash to get the soot off his carhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif and still cruise around getting 15-20 mpg while the gasser trucks are buying stock in Mobil.

And I've raced my cousin's 6.0 GMC gasser pickup stock for stock and beat him well so the 5.3's should be no problem.

Carry on and http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif Diesel Dragon http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

<DIV>Also, by building boost do you power braking?</DIV>

700 miles is not broken in. You will gain more MPG and HP up to and beyond 10,000 miles.

Get a box or a programmer. Your jaw will hit the ground when you feel the power.

I couldn't believe the power the first time I rode in a friend's truck. And when I got my truck I could not wait to get a box for it.

Be careful though it is HIGHLY additive.

Can anyone advise at what mileage is optimal to put in the new box? I have 2000 miles on my 3 week old Chevy 2500 and nobody can give me good advise as to what is a good mileage count to put it (Juice/Attitude) in. I am going to baby this thing (changing oil every 2000 miles...) until it is fully broken in however I do have people saying go ahead and put it in now only set it on lowest setting for min 100 miles before increasing the setting...something about letting the tranny/motor get "used to it."

Thanks

Had 1400 miles on mine when I juiced it. It now has 3400 and seems to run better everydayhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

You my friend need a TTS Tow Tune. You won't know the truck isn't bone stock, there is nothing visible to the eye. It won't hurt the truck, and you won't even know it's there.

You powerbrake it to 2000rpm in 4WD at a stoplight, and unless the car next to you is wearing drag tires, you'll clobber them for the first 60'. And unless they have something fast, you'll stay ahead to 60mph. To 60mph, with nothing but that tune on the truck, I can keep with a Camaro or Mustang V8 no problem. It is the ultimate "stealth stoplight weapon".

The Edge Juice is sweet too, just not as "stealthy".

If you don't want change anything on the truck... Still powerbrake the transmission to build boost for launching. You've probably noticed that the stock truck takes off pretty good once it hits 20mph, most of the reason is turbo lag. The turbo needs to have some load on it before it starts spooling. First gear isn't much of a load.
