There are so many types of motor oils out there with CI-4 and CH-4 ratings. What's the difference between them other than the price? I change my oil every month regardless and can buy Carquest oil for about $1.59 a liter instead of the Rotella that I'm using now. Thanks,
Nick

Basically the ratings are for different year model vehicles as emission standards get more strict. The latest oil rating CI-4 is for the latest 2007 year model ULS diesels. This newer oil has better additives to run cleaner and lube these engines better. I know there's probably a more scientific explanation, but this is what I understand from web browsing.
So, just use at least the API rating what your book calls for. There's no need to go higher.
The ratings go up alphabetically CG-4, CH-4, CI-4, CI-4+......

at once a month its prolly not a huge factor as long as its a good 15 40 . you change it before it has a chance to break down !

So I should just buy the least expensive oil I can find as long as it has the rating I need.
I do about 6000Km a month and sometimes I like to lug her when I get a tailgater. The oil is black as coal after the first smoke session.
