You likely have worn fuel level sensor contacts causing your gauge to be erratic, somewhat common but moreso on gas engines. If you are able to read trouble codes check for a P0493(I think)fuel level sens. high voltage. If so than it needs a new level sensor(assuming you don't have any wiring issues)
Can't help you on your trans noise.

i had this problem, beleive it or not the fuel pickup was broke and able to spin in the tank, which beat the snot out of the sender causing it to act up.

You may have a different issue, still may be the level sensor but typically the gauge will be very erratic & default to empty. If it does not read below 1/2 then you may have something obstructing the float arm as was already posted!

same problem on 03 cc lb dura/ally meter always read empty. Faulty fuel level sensor. Need to replace entire fuel pump. Use AC Delco part ($420) and have a shop drop the tank and fix it Labor ($170). $600+ after tax
