I changed the gear oil in the rear end this weekend on my Duramax powered Sierra. It said it took 4 qts but after 4 qts of Amsoil 2000 it didn't run out the fill hole. Is that normal?? I'm used to telling if it is full by having it leak out from the fill plug.

Thanks

Four ,four and half bout does it .... Make sure and Recheck fluid level on level ground to confirm in a day ...

Hmmm I thought it took a fraction under 4qts (7.6 pints) and I would be safe ordering just 4 qts of Amsoil.. Is it supposed to leak out of the fill plug when full?

It's suppose to be AT the fill plug .....

I went and looked in the owner's manual and finally found what it said. On 2500's it needs to be between 0 and 1/2" so if I can find a way to check a 1/2" deep in the fill hole I'll be set.

Stick your pinky finger in the fill hole to where you can bend down the tip of your finger. If you can't feel the oil, it's too low.

Use a allen wrench that is 1/2 inch on one side to check the level.

The reason why that fill hole is at that exact position is that the fluid has to be exact level (leak out until finished leaking out) with that hole. Little below is also OK but to be safe just let some of the goo leak out (catch it, don't destroy our nature...). Its as easy as that. Have done it for decades and it works all the time.

Thanks i will check with an allen wrench or my pinky and see how far it is below that.
