: Anyone use Biodiesel as a power increaser?
mannytranny 06-19-2004, 08:40 PM They run BD in most diesel race cars in europe.
Anyone tried it? Might get you a few extra tenths of a second off of the quarter.
I have run some homemade in the old Volvo, and it gives it a decent increase in power. Right now, Ive got a tank of waste veggie oil that seems to help too.....But dont do that with the max.
Centane of veggie oil is 57, IIRC.
Super Diesel 06-19-2004, 11:40 PM I run B100 in my Dmax all the time (B20 in winter). Check out the info on my site. It give some pretty good info. Super Diesel
mannytranny 06-20-2004, 01:51 AM We love the smell of clean air, but we also love the power of our diesels for travel, electricity, and heating. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Very impressive. Do you make your own BD, of buy it?
You hit the nail on the head with that sentence...
have a good one.....
BTW, have you noticed a power increase when running B20?
Super Diesel 06-20-2004, 10:49 AM Some times I make my own, and some times I buy it. No power increases that i've noticed. My emissions goes way down though. Super Diesel
Micheal Tomac 06-20-2004, 01:56 PM I've ran a few tanks of b20 thru my truck. While I haven't tried it at the track yet the truck didn't seem to be down on power running it on the street. Also, mileage didn't seem to go up any under my normal heavy right foot.
I've been using BD if I'm within 20 minutes or so (out of my way) of a selling station for two years now. I've noticed quicker winter starts, smoother idle with large extrude honed injectors, .1/ .25 increase in mileage w/ trailer only, not bobtail, (not real dramatic, but it's all good), rediculously clean emmisions (which helps with big nozzles also), and I'm supporting my neighbors farms. I think if you could run Bio-diesel exclusively, pump and system longevity would be out of this world, as the increase in lubricity alone is worth all the pains of finding it. Used oil (home mixes) make your exhaust smell like hot french fries also. One guy in Des Moines makes it out of used peanut oil, and his exhaust smells like Krispy Kreme donuts. I'd eat myself to 400 lbs. driving that truck http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif but Bio-diesel really is the bomb...T
Blue Max 06-20-2004, 10:26 PM Hey ynot, isn't Alleman just north of D.M.? Do you have your own shop, if so I may have to stop by some time. Mike-
Hey Mike, ya, just north of Ankeny. I'm mobile with a trailer rig, but I rent the old HF shop off Dixon for local work if I need, and have 7 other shops in Iowa for emergency stuff. PM me or whatever and we'll get together for coffee(?;-) sometime. Be cool...T
mannytranny 06-20-2004, 11:42 PM Mtomac - biodiesel isnt known for increasing mileage....Acually, many report a slight decrease when running over b50.
I am gathering the guts to pour in 5g of a homemade batch someday.............

Micheal Tomac 06-21-2004, 12:21 AM i thought the VW TDI guys were getting better mileage on bio?
mannytranny 06-21-2004, 01:04 AM Nope. Almost all guys were getting about .5 to 1 mpg less on B100.
Oddly enough, many were also reporting an increase in mileage when using <B20...
Super Diesel 06-21-2004, 01:18 AM Hey mannytranny, did you test the specific gravityof the mix yet? It will usually test around .880 or so (it sould be between .860 & .900 at 80 deg F). Do you have a hydrometer to test it with? If not I can set you up. There is a little less energy contained in Biodiesel. Most don't know and cant tell. It all depends on the amount of methanol left in it from the transeterification process. I boil all mine out at about 165 deg F. You can water wash it as well but this takes till the next day to compleat. I supplement the power loss with a water/meth injection set up I have created. It cools the motor (250-300 deg) as well as adding power to it. I just use widshield washer fluid in it. 40% methanol in most, and it keeps the motor squeeky clean inside. No deposits. Add a big program, some N2O, = Super Diesel. Your doing us proud Mtomac. Keep it up.
mannytranny 06-21-2004, 11:21 AM I have been dabbling with smaller batches. I got a run of some bad veg oil, and have made 2 batches of jelly. I am suspecting water.
From what I made, I was able to get to .88 after a day or two of setting outside with the lid off. In the meantime, Ive been running SVO filtered in the old Volvo and a diesel mix. I like that a lot.
I still need to learn how to do titrations, but once I get that, I should be good to go. I am also hoping that the oil I am getting is water free........I really dont have the means to boil aout any water..........I have a conical shaped (plastic) reaction tank.
What do you think about not boiling off the water before it undergoes transesterfication?
