: trans limps on steep angle
Diesel Power 09-26-2006, 04:16 PM Well now that i finally started trailering my truck to events i've found that when i go to back it off the trailer it gets about half-way off and then the trans looses reverse, sets an SES and i have to turn it off and back on to get it to back the rest of the way down. this is after letting it warm up for 10 minutes or so. if i let it run for 1/2 hour then i don't have any problems. anyone ever seen this? i don't know if its related but when the trans is cold it makes a nastly high-pitched noise that sounds like a pump whine but it goes away when warmed up and still shifts fine.. sounds to me like fluid isn't filling everything correctly?
66flh 09-26-2006, 04:28 PM At that angle getting off the trailer, all the fluid probably goes to the back of the pan, maybe it is starving?
Max Payne 09-26-2006, 05:35 PM How is the fluid level?
never satisfied 09-26-2006, 11:32 PM check the filter in the pan. Mine made that sound and when I pulled the pan the filter fell out. I think it was sucking air. It also went into limp mode once.
ShumDit 10-05-2006, 08:13 PM Parked my truck at my brothers place today. Backed it down the barnyard a lil bit ~ about 6" grade and we went shopping. Came back hopped in and didn't feel it engage when placed in D. Looked up on the edge attitude and watched it indicate 1st, 3rd and 5th. Could feel it clunking into each one. Have a similar tranny setup like Diesel Power's done just last month. First time I experienced anything like it. The angle wasn't that steep ~ Scary!
ratlover 10-05-2006, 08:39 PM It sucking air were the filter goes into the trans is something I would look at first.
You got you a cool man :bling: filter lock? :D
ShumDit 10-05-2006, 09:49 PM Of course ~ must've :) Thats why I journied 500miles oneway to assure I had the absolute very best :ro)
Mike L. 10-05-2006, 10:13 PM This is something new that I have not run into yet. Sure sounds like a low fluid type situation.
ratlover 10-06-2006, 12:29 PM If the owner of one of the most bad assed duramaxes and owner of the best GM diesel site on the net is having a problem becasue he dosnt know how to check his trans fluid I am going to LMFAO :rotflmao: ):h Anytime he says crap about bras I'm just going to have to call him Capt. Dipstick ):h
BullydogPowered 10-06-2006, 12:36 PM so has anybody checked to see if the internal fell out? mine is acting retarded too.
Diesel Power 10-06-2006, 12:41 PM Sorry PHIL, but my fluid level has been good and checked on many occasions so i know that isn't it. It did it to me 2 days ago and i wasn't backing it off the trailer.. here's the scenario. 99.99999% of the time the trucks sits in the garage (level floor) at night. i autostart it, let it run for 10-15 minutes then take off and i always baby it until the engine is warmed up and the trans hits 150 (weird pump whine doesn't go away until trans hits about 150*). also since this trans has been it it warms up a LOT quicker than the old one which lasted 2 years. this one almost warms up as quick as the engine, but it it never gets over 200*. it just gets to 150-180* real quick whereas my stock 2003 takes a while before the tranny temp needle even starts to move.
that being said this particular morning i had left the truck in the driveway as Niki had her car in the garage. my drive isn't steep by any means but it isn't level either. i went outside, started it up, waited about 2 minutes, then put her in reverse and it moved a couple feet the "R" started blinking. i put it back in drive, then back in reverse a couple times and finally caught long enough to back out of the driveway. This has never happened when going forward but my driveway slopes up to the house not down so maybe that has something to do with it only happening in reverse.
I dunno. its weird. Also when i sled pull with the TTS dual cp3's the trans won't shift until 4500RPM sometimes. i have datalogged it with the tech2 and i see the TCM command the shift, but it seems to wind through the gears too fast in 4low to keep up with the power the motor is making. its done this since it was refreshed last time on and off but the strange thing is it runs fine at the drag strip..
Just trying to see if anyone else has any similar experiences. I'm thinking some of these details have to be related to each other and aren't just coincidence.

Diesel Power 10-06-2006, 12:43 PM no i haven't. what do you mean by "retarted"?
so has anybody checked to see if the internal fell out? mine is acting retarded too.
Mackin 10-06-2006, 02:13 PM Pump problem sounds like. Mike will figure it out
BullydogPowered 10-06-2006, 03:51 PM no i haven't. what do you mean by "retarted"?
Diesel Power,
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106545
the truck makes no abnormal noises
ShumDit 10-06-2006, 04:50 PM Only noise I could detect w/my sorry ears was the clunking as it jumped from gear to gear including 5th while still and at idle w/my foot on the brake. My tranny setup is very much like Nicks ~ I too chkd level and after removing 1.25qrts, its right on the hot high mark ~ if I can't trust the dipstick, what can I trust? and no, think not the filter as the Best in the West installed the SCIII and deep pan.
BullydogPowered 10-06-2006, 08:16 PM Diesel Power
Now that you mention the temperature, mine rises faster than it used to also. i will be dropping the pan tomorrow to see if that filter fell out.
ecc_33 10-07-2006, 09:00 AM my old blue truck did the no reverse thing once while parked in the garage...it was like it was in neutral...fluid was fine...let it set over night and the next morning everything was ok..no problems after that
BullydogPowered 10-07-2006, 05:11 PM dropped the pan today, filter was where it should be. fluid was darker than i would have liked. it didnt smell like the new stuff i put in but was similar, i just figured that it was different fluid. i know suncoast puts kendall in when they do an install and they did mine. im going to attribute the weird feeling, weird happenings to the brakes.
