I have a 2006 2500HD (LBZ) and brought my truck in for service today for the second time complaining that the rear differential was leaking. The first time, the case itself, had a bad weld causing the leak. The first visit was about 3 months ago and over this past weekend I noticed it was leaking again. Just received a call from the local dealer, and sure enough ,the new transfer case has a bad weld again.

Has anyone seen this? What is the odds of two cases having bad weld?:help2:

You start with the rear diff leaking/bad welds, but end with saying the new transfer case had a bad weld... I'm assuming your talking about the diff..

I have never seen a leaking weld?

Sounds like something else is leaking and they didn't fix the problem. Are you talking about where the tubes are welded to the case.

What did they do the first time, did they replace the whole axle?

My rear diff is leaking where the axle tubes enter the diff. Is that a welded joint? It's more of a weep, but I'm past warrantee. Is this leak common?

I dont know about on these trucks as I am new to the whole diesel world. But on older gm 10 bolt rearends this was common with any hi performance setup due to the tube actually starting to spin in the center section due to the torque of the rear diff wanting to nose up under acceleration and the springs forcing the tubes to stay in a somewhat fixed position.

As I stated above I dont know if that is a problem with the setup in these trucks or not. I didnt look at how the tubes are held in place on the diff when I changed out the break in oil.

On all the rearends I have looked at in the past years, they are not welded all the way around like they used to. They now heat them to expand the case, the force the tubes into the housing and then only plug weld in 3 or 4 places so they are not welded all the way around the the oil does leak out

Thanks, good info.
