As some of you know I have the second bad flywheel with a constant squeak at idle. I stopped by at the dealer today and the duramax tech guy there called GM tech department to enquire about the flywheel that is supossed to be in the making. The tech told us that some time in July the new Flywheel will be released. That is good news as long as it is in the first week of july. Then I can take a brand new flywheel/clutchplate/pressurplate on a nice three hour ride to the Shore for Vacation. It has been going on too long with the flywheel problems I have had.

Just thought I would relay the message to all with 6 speeds.

Thanks for the info. I not sure if I have a flywheel problem again or a T/O bearing out again. I can't afford to park the truck at the dealer right now. I hope the new flywheel is way better than the old #. Time will tell.

Thanks for the info. Mine has been rattling/growling when clutch pedal is halfway depressed since 11K miles (currently have 17K miles). There is also a slight grinding sound and roughness when letting out the clutch. I was informed by GM and the Dealer that it would not be repaired until the updated flywheel was available. This is the first I have heard of a release date. Please keep us updated. I will do the same if I hear anything. I would like to hear from other 6-speed owners having flywheel problems. What are your symptoms? What is the dealer or GM telling you? Thanks.

The only way to fix the problem is to put a single mass flywheel in. And I don't think GM is going to do that. With any dual mass flywheel at some time or another its going to let you down. Ford has done had this problem. Thats why there is a one piece in the 99 and newer truck. I wish GM would get the hint. But from what I've heard there trying to make the dualmass work for about the 4th or 5th time. If the new is a dualmass I hope Southbend has the one piece done because thats whats going in mine. The dealer has the go to put a nother in mine tomorrow if they want but I told them no. Its getting bad when I have had 4 flywheels put in before the first 12000 miles on a new truck.

What I don't understand is why my fathers 2002 3500 mason dump has 50,000 miles on it and his flywheel does not make any sounds at all and mine has had a problem since 1000 miles and finaly at 10,000 had one put in and it made the same noise after 200 miles and now sounds very bad squeaks constantly every thing new was put in it though. What happend to buying a manual because it was supposed to be the better tranny.

I got the same problem, mine went at about 8,000 KM and then again at about 16,000 KM, Truck now has 26,000 KM and GM refuses to replace till new one is released.

Mine doesn't make any noise at idle or when clutch is fully depressed, but when I push the pedal down anywhere from 1" - 5" it sits there and rattles.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

The sound is so bad I've reverted to old school shifting without clutching. Driven rigs enough that revs are easy to hit. You get some funny looks from passengers when you don't clutch, but that's ok!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Thanks for the info about release date though, maybe this time they'll get it right! Doubtfull, but maybe.......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

You'd have to check with them. As far as I know, CPMac's is the only one currently available. Southbend might be reselling CPMac's as well, but I doubt that they are going to have a separate, distinct product offering.

Update on the status of new flywheel. I stopped at the dealer again today and the mechanic called GM tech center. They have finalized the flywheel design and it is in fact on its way out to replace the existing part numbers they said in 4-6 weeks there will be a bulletin on the problem and flywheels will be available to the dealerships. Also an interesting fact I found out is the squeaking pedal issue with that garbage plastic setup they have for a clutch pedal is going to be taken care of with a new pedal assemblly.
till next post, later.

Peter;

this is really great info! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I intend to call my dealer and talk to them about it. They deal with Cads and GMCs and not many diesels so they don't have a lot of knowledge about this sort of thing. They have been dealing with my hard and swueaky clutch and have replaced the flywheel once. Questions:

can you obtain the new p/n for the flywheel?(want to compare to last one replaced) can you find out if the new one is a dual or single mass? and most importantly, can you get the tech phone #? my dealer seems to have contact with a tech rep that knows very little about these problems. If you cannot get the number, can you identify the tech center and it's location?

I know this is a pain but it would be a great help for some of us.

thanks,

john

I'm running around with a growling flywheel waiting for the new one. Has anyone had a flywheel totally fail or self destruct and leave them stranded. I'm going to Arizona in a few weeks and it doesn't look like the new flywheel is going to get here in time.

Deadeye,
Don't know of the p/n yet. I have the last P/N. I don't know how it works but each region has its own tech center I think. They should have now problem calling and inquiring mabey see what you get from another dealership. But the duramax mechanic at high point chevy is really a good guy and will call at the end of the day just to check on the status of it for me. To be honest I was so happy to hear that it is on its way that I did not even ask if it was a single or dual mass. Have to call them back to find that out. But do know that the new clutch pedal assembly will be like the old pedals (NOT PLASTIC).

Once the flywheel is available someone please post in the TSB section. It doesn't get as much action as this section so we can find it easier. My slave cyl is leaking and I'm holding off taking it in until the flywheel is ready just in case.
