Let's see - that was two questions. Of course the answer to both is "Yes" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I changed to synthetic oil at about 1,000 miles. I've heard others recommend waiting 'til about 10,000 miles, but I have seen no direct information supporting that wait.

If you have done much towing, drain & replace the differential fluid. If not towing, wait for 5,000 miles. I changed mine recently (at ~4600 mi) and found out why this is recommended (lots 'o crap in there!).

The transmission spin-on filter needs replacing at 5,000 miles.

dmaxalliTech has posted a great list of maintenance info:

By all means check your differential fluid NOW! I checked mine at 700 miles and it was half full. I have read a lot of posts about low fluids. I changed front and rear diff fluids, spin on transmission filter and oil and filter then. I went to Rotella synthetic----no problems. Next change of oil I'm thinking of switching to Mobil 1 Truck & SUV oil, I've read a lot about it and can get it at my local Wally world. You might want to do some research on a secondary fuel filter, most go with Racor or Nicktane. I just ordered a Nicktane and will install it soon. Some food for thought--- I have never seen a engine wear out because the fluids were changed too much!!!!!!

I would change the motor oil and filter even though itts probaly not needed. Think synthetic oil is a waste of money at this point. Just use a good 15-40 rated for dieesels. I've got Valvoline Super Blue in mine right now but there others just as good. Your differential is probaly low, most are when they are new. I'd chaaange it and use synthetic. Don't skimp on oil filters, use OEM, NAPA, CARQUEST, BALDWIN, or soemthing of this quality. No Frams or the like. All fuel filters for the Duramax are said to be made by RACOR, so probalhy any brand will do. I get a good price On Baldwin so I use thiers. My tran filters I buy dirct fro a Alllison shop. When you change the Tran filter transfer the magnetic waher frm the old filter to the new filter. Enjoy your new truck.

P.S. I forgot if you pay someone to service your truck be ready to pay big.Edited by: Bill Gisse
