I noticed you are in upstate NY ... I live in Owego and ten quarts of M1 Truck & SUV showed up at the Wal-Mart in Vestal NY a few weeks ago. I bought all 10 and as of a few days ago they had not yet re-stocked it.

Same here in Fl. its hit or miss if they are going to have it or not,& when they do its only 8-10 qts.The stock guy said they only get 1 case in at a time.

I found our local walmart finally had some in stock so I bought all 5 cases. Maby this will show them they need to get more on hand.

Just started to see it at our local Murrys, $4.99 per Qt. Haven't bought any yet, my truck has another 4,000 miles before it needs a change!

I've been using 15W-40 Mobil Delvac 1300 oil in my duramax. I read in this forum that it was recommended to use the Delvac 1300 during the summer months and to use the Mobil SUV/Truck 5W-40 synthetic during the winter months. I wanted to go ahead and change over to the synthetic oil now. Any thoughts/suggestions you guys have would be helpful. Thanks! Edited by: Jeff1

Would it hurt using the 5W40 Truck/SUV formula in the summer (well what summer we have here in WI). I am planning going on vacation end of August and want to change over the synthetic and would like to either go with the Mobil1 Truck/SUV stuff (that is on sale now) or the Amsoil 15w/40?

Using it during the summer time is OK. Look in your Diesel Supplement manual. It shows 5W40 can be used for all temperature ranges.

I know it would be better in the winter, especially here in WI, it is just the summer heat that "worries" me. Unless I am misunderstanding about the viscosity numbers, the 5W means it wont drop below whatever 5 translates to in cP at the hot end of it's temp range and the 40 is the thickest it will get at the cold end of it's temp range. So the 15 would handle the hot a little better (atleast how I understand it). If I am wrong someone please correct me.

Don't worry, we'll both get corrected if we're wrong. But, I believe 5w indicates the oil's winter or cold weather characteristics. The 40 indicates it characteristics at normal operating temperature. I use it year 'round and that includes heavy towing at 100+ temperatures. Oil pressure never waivers. I use Mobil Delvac 1, which I understand is identical to the Truck/Suv Mobil 1. I've been using it since the truck had 2,200 miles on it. My oil analyses have been fine.

Years ago when I lived in NJ, a now defunct store called "Jamesway" had a special on Mobil 1 for $3.33 per quart. I bought a couple of 6 packs, and they scanned at the register for $3.33 for the entire six pack. I told the check-out lady that I thought that was an error, and she told me "NO, OUR SCANNERS ARE NEVER WRONG". So I went out of the store with my purchase, came back in, and bought out all the Mobil 1 I could with the cash in my wallet. After all, their SCANNERS ARE NEVER WRONG.

With an attitude like that, it is not surprising that Jamesway went under.

During the summer in SoCal, the deserts can get up to 115 deg F. I have pulled my Travel Trailer and boat trailers across the desert headed towards the Colorado River at these temperatures. I use Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 oil. My oil analysis's have always come back just fine. Once the engine is up to temperature, the oil is 40 weight. You will not have a problem using the Truck and SUV oil during the summer time in Wisconsin. For sure it is the oil you want to use it in the winter (WI is too cold for me to even think about, a cold winter night in SoCal is 45 degrees). Once again, reference your diesel supplement. While GM recommends 15W-40, 5W-40 is also acceptable for all temperature ranges.


John Kennedy also lives somewhere in Wisconsin. He has been around diesels for a long period of time. You may want to PM him and ask for his recommendation.

Thanks for reassurance it will do OK in summer. I know it gets warm there I'm a native CA boy myself (grew up in LA) and it was QUITE A CHANGE to see these cold temps and snow on the ground for months at a time (altho I have a pic of it snowing at my house in LA). I knew the 5W-40 would be better for winter but was "worried" about it thinning out in the summer too much. There is a place here that has Mobil 1 on sale for $3.98/qt and was going to get it and a Baldwin filter and change it mid August before a trip but was leery it may be too thin. Now that I now it can handle the heat fine I'll pick it up while on sale.

All of you just stop. Use Schaeffer's Supreme 7000 15w40. Then you'll never have to worry about changing viscosities and you'll reap the rewards of both worlds.

It's not a pure synthetic however. I can get a 15w40 pure synthetic oil from Amsoil or the 5W40 Mobil1 Truck/SUV stuff. Both are cheaper than the Schaeffer's stuff and not a blend.

Cant find the Mobil stuff anywhere in South Jersey, running Rotella T till I do.

I managed to get it for $3.98/qt (on sale) at Fleet Farm. I'm still trying to find out if it really rebadged Delvac-1. I've heard both yes and no.

I picked some up there as well. Good price but I too am wondering why they would repackage Delvac1 into quarts/cases and sell it for less. It seems they would be more likely to put additives into the Mobil1 blends and sell into the truck diesel market. Been buying my fuel at Waterford Oil in Waterford; he says he puts Primrose in all year round. He also sells a supplement called PowerService, which I've been using. Since he's a Mobil dealer, he also sells the Mobil Delvac 1. Just about any way you want it: qts, gallons, etc., but nearly $5 @qt any way. When you find a Wally world that carries the Truck/SUV, how about a "heads up"? Thanks.

I'm in Grafton and so far have not found a place around here that sells Delvac1. I can get Mobil1 Truck/SUV at the local Walmart in Saukville and the Supercenter in West Bend. I ended up getting it at Fleet Farm in West Bend since they had it on sale for $3.98/qt (50 cents cheaper/qt than Walmart). There also was an auto parts store near there that had Baldwin filters so worked out fine. I wont be putting it in until later this month and maybe next spring change to the 15w40 stuff (Amsoil maybe).

Compare the properties of Delvac1 and Mobil1 Truck/SUV on the Mobil webpage. They look identical...

I saw that too but was wondering if they had the same additives, etc. It would be nice if they were identical as a lot more places sell this.

There have been several Delvac 1 and Truck/SUV oil comparisons over on the oildrop server. They appear essentially the same. (Probably within measurement error of these $18 tests that we pay for at least). Follow this link and several others on the site.

Thanks for the BobIsTheOilGuy.com link. I’ve also followed the discussion there and I agree that the differences are most likely within the measurement error of oil analysis process. I’ve seen similar differences from samples taken at the same time and sent to different labs. I’m also curious if blackgeo has found some new info in addition to the BobIsTheOilGuy posts.

You are probably right. Since they are making this stuff in huge batches (each one is probably 10,000+ gals) you will always have a little variation. I called Mobil1 Customer Service yesterday and they guy I talked to also said they were the same exact thing.

I found the mobile suv/truck at my local fleet farm today for 4.88 a quart. they had 18 case's of it and somtimes have it for 3.77! they have had it in stock since it's been on the market.

I got them a few weeks ago at Fleet Farm for $3.98/qt. I've never seen them for $3.77 but that is even better.

Since Delvac 1 at Farm & Fleet costs me $20+/gal I could save a few bucks by buying the Truck/Suv in quarts.

Has anyone tested the Truck/SUV stuff with extended drain intervals? You see claims of Amsoil going like 20K miles (or more) before needing to be drained. What about this stuff?
