: Need help with my overhead Attitude mount
Trippin 06-17-2004, 11:29 PM Guys,
Like most of you I haven't been happy with the viewing angle of my Attitude in the overhead mount. So with a little solid modeling I propose the follwing design. This one would require removing the Attitude from it's front cover and inserting it into the billet front cover pictured here. The attraction is, it is all uniform across the front. No transition from aluminum to plastic. I can also cut out the inside to insert the entire Attitude just as we do now. Obviously the blank area is for switches I just haven't drawn them yet. Before I cut some prototypes I welcome your comments, criticisms, and concerns.

BMDMAX 06-17-2004, 11:33 PM That is pretty cool. I'd order one!
Max Power 06-17-2004, 11:35 PM Very nice! My only concern is that it MIGHT look a little funny. I'd have to see it to know for sure. The other concern I have is that it might not be enough of an angle. I wish there was a way to make it fit in the overhead console a little better too.
Keep it the way you show it here. It would look a lot better then using the front 1/2 of the attitude IMO.
Keep up the good work! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifEdited by: Max Power
Trippin 06-17-2004, 11:44 PM I really am interested in any changes you guys might like to see. If we design it together I just might get it right. I might be able to do some protoypes next week. I thought about recessing it into the console as well, but I just couldn't get it to look right.
Powell 06-17-2004, 11:49 PM Id buy one for sure! Email me about testing, Ill give you the cash for the materials!
Terry 06-17-2004, 11:52 PM With your current design, what would hold
the "display guts" onto the mount? Would the stock
back & screws still be used by just adding
some screwholes to your new mount?
I think I like it, but I would also like
to see it installed in a console too....
Good job!
Thanks for any insight,
T.Edited by: Terry
Trippin,
Great idea if you could color match, otherwise I think the aluminum looks better. Color matching with a different texture is going to be tough since even the same color won't look like a match...
One other thought, how about if it were canted down a little?
I'm just thinking about what it takes to visualize it while driving since I've been testing, and it seems like if it were angled down a little as well, it would be easier to see.

Love the design, only thing I could add would be to not only put the angle towards the driver how about also tilting it down somewhat to make it a little easier to read from the drivers seat. Keep up the good work, and I would also be interested in buying one if you get it going.

I'm working on something for that. I've got an EGT guage and had a local trophy shop cut a piece of 1/4" thick black lexan with a hole in the middle.
I've run the wires for the EGT guage, but they're a bit short. Haven't got that one figured out yet, but the ATS mount could be removed and just lay in behind the lexan piece with the gauge. It's a bit big for the hole right now, but I'll get a pic when I get it fitted.
As for the blank space, a trophy shop could always do a monogram or something?

Bill
2MuchFun 06-18-2004, 06:20 AM I would toss my ATS mount for that!
I like the idea of a powdercoat color match or even anodized colors but the aluminum look is fine too. (You could have a Chrome option for the Bling blingin' members!) http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
I would like to see an option for the blank area; either Blank, a button or two, or engraved.
Personally, I dont like the 'ATS' engraved on my mount. I would prefer just plain blank.
I like the idea of a very slight downward tilt, but not too much ~might start looking funky.
Great Job!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

I just thought of something, what happens to our warranty when we remove the date and version sticker on the side of the attitude to mount it in the new face plate. Might want to check with "Edge" to see if we can move, or just remove it and maybe place it on the back of the unit. I have worried about placing the velcro on the side of it to place it on my dash. Just a thought.

Paul,
I asked Edge about splitting the case on the Attitude to get it into the ATS mount and the warranty label.
They said "no problem" and in fact, placed the new sticker on the back of the Attitude after it was re-flashed the other day.
tws_andrew 06-18-2004, 11:44 AM I am in for one. A little more angle towards the driver and maybe a little downward would be ideal but this is a huge improvement

HBruns 06-18-2004, 01:29 PM This looks excellent!
I have an Edge Juice /w Attitude coming soon and have been wondering how to mount the Attitude. I've been looking for some further information on the ATS mount, but came up short. Your idea looks like a better solution than the ATS mounting plate, and I am certainly interested.
Do you have any ballpark numbers on what you'll price it at?
Thanks!
HBruns
CntrlCalDmax 06-18-2004, 01:45 PM Much better than the ATS! Would you also make one the fit the 2004 overhead short console? It has a different opening from the earlier ones. I'd buy one in a heartbeat! Right now mine is basically in the "Edge location" with double sided tape. Not too bad there but that mount would be sweet!

Trippin 06-19-2004, 01:36 PM Paul,
The response has been great! I'm using everbody's input to improve the design. The downward angle is easy to draw, but a little more difficult to manufacture. Aren't the 03 and 04 consoles the same? The 01s and 02s different. I've got lots of family stuff going on this weekend, but I hope to make some chips next week. Gotta build a fixture to hold them then the I can build the parts themselves. I should have an idea on pricing at the end of next week. I'll keep you all informed. Thanks for all the great ideas, keep em coming!

BIG DIPPER 06-19-2004, 02:25 PM I think the '01 and '02 with the full over head console are already at a downward angle and the above drawings would work fine. The '03 and '04 are at less of an angle and would benefit from a little adjustment......looks like 2 different ones will have to be made. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
Now if you could only get Edge to display boost to about 50lbs. we would be set.....I like to plan ahead.

Not only will I take one, in any design ya'll come up with, but I'd float you the money in advance (+ whatever it takes) to complete R&D. Fantastic job, Trippin, but I hope you're ready to mass produce. This'll be the hot ticket on ALL the upgraded trucks, guaranteed. That being said, a "dealer lock-out" would be cool, but this being the cool item for all, it'll be just a few weeks before they figure out what the locked cover is for, then it's the same old... I haven't seen one yet, but is anyone elses box (like ATS's tranny box) small enough to fit in the blank space? Keep up the great work!!!! Any luck in incorporating a dealer lock out cover in your new designhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Trippin 07-15-2004, 02:58 PM I may not be any good, but I'm slow.
Here are some progress pics of the part roughed out, I'm starting to sound like a broken record with my almost done routine, but I 've been pulled in many different directions these last few weeks, it's incredible.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif It's good to be wanted. Of course the first part is the hardest and takes the longest.
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/D77_att2.JPG
Harley, I haven't done anything about the lock yet as I wanted to get the base model done and to the guys who just want the generic version. Then we can look at some variations, maybe some personalized mounts. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gifEdited by: Trippin
baimpala 07-15-2004, 03:45 PM Wow, that looks great. Even better than I thought it would looking at the CAD you did. Nice work.

Trippin 07-16-2004, 04:20 PM Trippin is it angled downward at all?
I've had requests for 4 different types. And will build all four.
1) Downward with plastic Attitude inserted in.
2) Downward with Attitude guts into billet mount.
3) Just angled with plastic Attitude inserted in.
4) Just angled with Attitude guts inserted in.
This pictured one is "Just angled, ready to press in the plastic Attitude.
Max Power 07-16-2004, 07:20 PM Trippin, you're never one to disappoint. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
I'm gonna have to see some pictures before I decide. I'm leaning towards your original design. Angled with attitude guts insert.

I haven't had time to run the finish cut yet so the last pictures are pretty much where we stand. Trying to balance the work and family thing. Not to sound like a broken record but maybe finish up and some new pics Friday.

Absolutely.
What's the good word on this setup?
Diesel Tech 07-26-2004, 02:43 PM Trippin is out doing the family thing for the next few weeks. If anyones out running around Lake Powell you might run across his family taking ownership of him for awhile.
Deadeye 07-26-2004, 05:39 PM Hope he has fun http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
I will be interested as it it is tilted enough for my tri-focals to see the screen . . . http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
TheDuramax 07-28-2004, 11:42 PM Trippin, NICE WORK. Looks great. I want one, put me on the list!
Trippin 08-01-2004, 01:00 AM Guys,
I just got back from a week away at Lake Powell. Here are the pics I promised.
I've got one week back home and then another trip next week. (I had to work around the kids summer schedule)
Production on this version will begin as soon as I get back. Next will be the full billet front where you will insert your Attitude guts into the mount itself. Then the combination angled versions. Pricing? Oh yeah I gotta work on that too!

Trippin, that is simply excellent work! </v:stroke></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:ulas></v:path><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shape></v:imagedata></v:shape>
I'm interested. I can see one with a downward tilt, a solid installation of the mount to avoid rattles and to frustrate the attempts of nosy people (a lock is not necessary because the removal of the entire overhead console is way too simple), and the ability to install, perhaps lighted, micro-toggled switches of my own choice! I like the natural finish---no logos or labels for me...I peeled that stuff off of the truck when I brought it home...don't want it on the inside if I can help it. Something like "Trippin Products" would certainly be acceptable to give the man credit---put it on the side of the unit where it's angled out.
Does Mr. Trippin have a website? He should get more involved in e-commerce with these great ideas!Cool. </v:imagedata></v:shape>

Burner 08-02-2004, 01:17 AM Smooooooooth! Man, that's a Tripp!
akdiesel 08-02-2004, 02:52 AM Friction should hold it in like the ATS model.
Trippin,
Could you take pictures of it in place at a view from eye level with the attitude on. I know its asking for a lot, but you have done a great job and I can't figure out why ATS did not come out with this idea when they started working on the first mount.
Trippin 08-05-2004, 11:37 PM Guys, here are some pictures with the mount installed in my 03. The first is from the driver's point of view. I typically drive with my seat almost all the way forward so my smurf like legs can reach the pedals. I took this picture holding the camera in front of my face and then rotating my head to see the monitor. I used to have to lean into the center of the truck to see the monitor display. Of course the most important picture became pixelated when I reduced it for uploading. High res pics at the link in my sig.
The second picture is just from the center of the truck between the two front seats.
The last is from the passengers view.
I'm a little worried about the protrusion out away from the console and am considering a redesign. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I will make them this way for any that have to have them right now,(Read Harley 99) http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif. Any way you guys are my friends and my critics. So let me know.

Max Power 08-05-2004, 11:51 PM To be honest, I like the looks of the ATS ones better. But this is all about function. Yours is definately a way better viewing angle. I look forward to getting one.
Burner 08-05-2004, 11:52 PM Can you recess the whole thing? i know the button would be a reach... but the view might be better?
Burner
Trippin 08-06-2004, 12:04 AM The recess can only go back a little bit before we run into the console, but that was my thought exactly, pushing it back as far as it can go on the next one. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
Burner 08-06-2004, 12:15 AM Remember the Burb pic? How much would one of those cost? I don't think they are too much... I don't think. Eric could tell us. If we had that console and your mount, it would most likely be perfect!
Max Power 08-06-2004, 12:28 AM What about the one with the aluminum from instead of the edge front? I expected you to make that one first. I guess it would be easy to add switches similar to ats'?
Harley99 08-06-2004, 12:37 AM Trippin
It looks good, but I think I will have to wait until you design one with the locking cover. Once I install it I don't want to have to do all that uninstalling to take it out for a trip to the dealer. So I guess my sig will have to remain the same for now!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Trippin 08-06-2004, 12:40 AM What about the one with the aluminum from instead of the edge front? I expected you to make that one first. I guess it would be easy to add switches similar to ats'?
That one is next, but more complicated machining on the back side. I wanted to get this one right first.
Burner, you meant use the Burb console and then this mount? Can you post the burb pic? I know you sent it to me but you can save me the time of serching for it. I wonder if your Burb console is more like the 01's and 02's?
Max Power 08-06-2004, 12:42 AM I assume he is talkng about the console that is similar to the 01 and 02's. As far as I know those are the only 2 styles of consoles GM has used in full size trucks.
Burner 08-06-2004, 01:32 AM I never saved them....... just poped'em onto a RW CD and chunked them your way...... they're never more. I guess I could break a sweat and walk out... get the camera.. open the wifes Burb and snap a few.
Sheeeesh........... well, ok. I'l give it a try. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Burner 08-06-2004, 02:03 AM What a gainer. That's what i'd call a fast nac nac.
Burner 08-06-2004, 02:14 AM Max, We have yet to have sunroofs in our trucks. Yes, I know the 05's have them... still havn't seen it. This console looks as if it would cover about the same area without all the overhang ours does now. This postion is set further back and would give us a little better view of the monitor without as much eye strain. Once the aluminmumunmmm thing is in place... the rest is unuseable. I thought it would be nice to have it made for this console because it would make better use of the space as well as adding function with the home-link buttons. I don't think the thing is all that expensive... I don't think.
There again, only folks that know GM would see the difference.... that would be us. Stock trick parts is a must! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Oh yeah BTW----- Guy, I like what you've done. I can't wait to see what's next!
Max Power 08-06-2004, 09:33 AM I've seen that console 1000 times on ebay and I always thought it was the same as ours. The pictures here show that it is different. Interesting. You learn something new every day. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Z71 Grizzly 08-06-2004, 03:02 PM Nice Job, Trippin. I also think by the pictures about maybe recessing it for it might help on the more of a straight on view of it. Looks good right now too.
BH in AZ 08-06-2004, 03:46 PM Trippin: You might like the look better if it were anodized or painted a medium to dark gray. This may give a more finished appearance and less of a raw alum. look. Might also consider putting some groves or stair stepping the left side to reduce the bulk look that you mentioned. Another possibility is to angle the passenger side edge some more. Glad you have CAD software.
Keep on trucking, it is looking good!

HD4fun 08-06-2004, 11:27 PM Just a thought, but would it be possible to move the monitor all the way to the left but angle it the same way? Then the right side would be the flat aluminum piece. This way you could angle the monitor even more, and the right end piece would look blocked off. The look would make it seem like the monitor was in its own little case that you just slid in to the console, plus it would put the controls a little closer to the driver.

Burner 08-07-2004, 12:25 AM Having the monitor or Attitude on the far side, the way it is now, is much better. Also, the blank could be used for "Tripp" switches or maybe even a digital guage. Basicly if you move it closer it relegates the possiblity of using it for anything else. It also appears to be user friendly. Having a way to support one finger while using the other to change settings. It's readly accessable even if you're not looking at it......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
HD4fun 08-07-2004, 02:25 AM Some of us are left handed......I'm pretty much useless with the right but to steer the truck and click the volume controls on the steering wheel. I was picturing myself actually leaning over to hit the buttons. Good luck getting any of my right hand fingers to steady on those buttons.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
Burner 08-07-2004, 02:42 AM That was exactly my point. The open face gives you a spot to rest your fingers on while you feel around. I'm at a loss for words........... It's like using a gun rest, it keeps you steady. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif
Slightly off topic stupid question- What's the little black doohickey on the left edge of the console in this pic? Seen several in various pics. Looks like a little remote control or something. Being Trippin's, maybe missile launch and passenger eject buttons? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Redapple 08-10-2004, 12:58 AM Trippin,
That Attitude mount is awsome! Great job. I also like the idea of recessing it back as far as possible so it doesn't look "clunky" hangin out there on the fat side. Holy crap dude! I am eagerly waiting for your next prototype w/downward angle. Some might consider this a bit nit picky, but in looking at the photos, you might want to incorperate a small curve that runs along the front of the console. I know it adds complexity (surfacing on an nc or tilting the head with a flycutter on a manual machine, but it would look really good.
Bill
nlvcc 08-10-2004, 12:11 PM maybe if there are some elect.gurus out there, it might be possible to make it like a removeable cd player ,just remove it so sticky fingers wont take it. carry it like a cell phone when your away from your truck
Burner 08-10-2004, 10:32 PM nlvcc, not a bad Idea but... If you do make a connection behind the mount and take the attitude with you.....what happens? Does the truck remain in Level 4 or revert back to Level 1? I think it stays in the last setting, unless 5 is used and then it would go to 4...I think. I would freak out if someone had my truck @ Level 4 and no "backdown" feature working......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif

killerbee 08-12-2004, 09:02 AM Applause to innovationhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Love it. Definate improvement to ATS.
I'd love switches that are momentary-on, momentary-off for airbag inflation/deflation. Perhaps they could be found at Digi-key.
BH in AZ 08-22-2004, 05:53 PM Trippin,
I read a post on another thread that the ATS mount became very hot. Maybe slots on the top and bottom would allow for natural convection cooling.
