We have a 2003 GMC2500 Duramax with 5400 miles on it. The last time it was driven we noticed that it responded sluggishly to both steering and acceleration. After driving it for approximately 5 miles (and up a hill), we realized that the front brakes were smoking! We had the truck towed to the dealer where it was purchased, and the Service Manager advised us that the Hydro Boost was faulty and every time the steering wheel was turned, the brakes went on. Has anyone else experienced this? We are planning a two month trip towing a 28 ft. 5th wheel, and are apprehensive about the problem recurring.

Ummm, No, never heard of that one.
Since your brakes are powered by the steering pump, I could see where it could happen.
Had a steering pump grenade itself on my '96 3500. It contaminated the brake boost assembly and had to be replaced also.

Never had it happen, never seen it, but the symptom is listed in the service manual (5-22) and according to that, either the pressure going to the hydroboost is too high, or the hydroboost is defective. I wish I could explain exactly why turning the wheel causes the brakes to apply, they don't show a hydraulic schematic.
You know, I'm going to lose sleep over this!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

same thing happend on my 93 crew cab 1ton.... Chevy of course ...hehhheheee....Front brakes were smokin like a vampire in daylight....lol....Anyway had to replace ps pump and hydraboost, also had to clean up a crap load of fluid from under the carpet inside the cab...apparently the seals ruptured and fluid leaked into the cab...The sad thing is that i smelled something funny for about a week but was to lazy to have a look....Also had to replace 1 line and both rotors as they were not even good frisbies by the time they cooled down...The plus side is that the hydraboost is a fairly easy to replace...fairly expensive little devil though if memory serves me...good luck......

Funny thing happened today GM called me to say that there is recall on my Hydro Boost Modual .... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
The thing that pisses me off is I was there complaining of this 2 months ago and was told nothings wrong right now and we can't get you in to look at it any further today.Since I live 90 miles from my nearest dealer I just haven't had it looked at. I wonder what other problems have come from this?
My truck is a 2003 D/A they didn't what models or years were affected

yes recall and yours is the reason why. dealers are to inspect the boost unit and follow the service info that is very detailed...try to get them to get you new pads........patrick

Wonder what year/serials the recall affects? Mine was just replaced under warranty while it was in for an unrelated problem. I almost forgot about it but told them to look at it because there was dirt collecting all over it because of the fluid leaking.

Well the information I read tonight when I looked at my new Highways mag indicates it is " NHTSA Recall # 04V045 / GM Recall # 04004 " INvolves 2003 - 2004 vehicles with Hydro-Boost. It involves the relief valve assembly. This is the readers digest version, there is lots more reading.
