While driving my 1983 6.2 L in a pace arrow motor home in a heavy driving rain my voltage meter spiked off the scale, wipers/radio stopped working and when I used the brakes and turn signals the bulbs immediately burned out from high voltage. Some investigation found I had blown fuses in several cases, my wiper control module was fryed. The 12V hot to the ignition was dead (fusable link burnt out). She drove home fine (with no wipers or light) and after beign switch off she was dead. When I jumped 12V to the ignition she started right up and ran fine except the voltage on the previously dead igniton wire was 21V. This wire is to both the battery and the alternator so the high voltage was comming from the alternator. A buddy said high voltage might be because the alternator had no path back to the battery (fuseable link blown as detailed above) so I wired it to my jumper to provide such a path. The voltage remained at 21V. After careful consideration I decided my voltage regulator had failed while driving, the voltage had spiked dramatically blowing fuses, fusable links and every light bulb that was on. I replaced the voltage regulator Sunday and eplace the fuseable link/bulbs/fuses and rewired the windshild wipers. Upon start up the voltage gauge went off the dial again and my led battery monitor went up in smoke, fuseable link bit the dust again. I re-ran my jumper, disconnedted the alternator from the system and she started right up. This time the alternator was pushing 55 volts of power, as I increased RMP the voltage came DOWN into the mid 20's.......

I have absolutely no clue of how to proceed......Is it a grounding issue or something unnoticed that is frying voltage regulators.......I gave up and took it to the doctor's but the mechanic has let it sit most of the week as he searched for wiring diagrams.......I really need to be on the road for a Saturday tailgate and am looking for a solution or some thoughts......

I used two meters and even had my neighbor come by to verify the 21 and then 55 volts as the parts guy and the mechanic both said it was impossible......Any ideas??

sounds like you may have some bad diodes in the alt?

time for new alt... had a old dodge (notouris for this) would burn the volt gauge up and pop headlights and tail lights just replace the alt witha new one and you should be fine.... if you keep running it with the alt putting out that much you can make the batterys explode for father in laws 6.9 did this
