: touch up paint, how hard is it to do?

Hey guys!

I've got a black '03 that has some scratches in it from when I took it off road...umm yea I didn't think I was going to hit some branches but I did...damn it. Oh well it isn't like it can't be fixed. I've seen some threads talk about line-xing the rocker panels, and underside and so on and the 3m tape available at cabelas. But I'd really like to get the paint fixed first before I add the tape or whatever.

How difficult is it to do the touch up on chips ? Will a normal guy be able to do this and it still look good, like new? or do I have to get a paint shop involved and spend some money?

I had it touched up once under warranty, but that was the black step bars. This is the truck, I am not sure they'd cover it and I really don't want to go back to the dealers' body shop. Last time when the step bars were being painted the tards cracked my fender liner.

I may be able to get some of the scratches out with the clay bar, but the paint chips will need to be touched up a bit. I'd like it to look nice before I post the pic of my rig in the Member's Rigs or whatever thread.

Thanks.

If there very minor scatches it is easy. Buy a color match bottle and apply lightly until the scratch isn't seen. It wont look great right away. Let it sit for a day, in the sun. Then buff it out or lighty wet sand if you know how. If you put some touch up on a small scratch and then go over it with a buffer and a good coat of wax it will be very hard to tell.

If you plan on Line-Xing your rockers don't bother touching them up, they need to etch your clear coat anyway.

I found a neat product to help smooth out rock chips and scratches. I've used it on several vehicles now and it does work. Patience and time is the key for using this product. But when your done, only you will know where the damage was.

I'd just chalk them up to character marks. A truck is a truck afterall.

Don't get me wrong, I like my truck lookin nice, but try not to worry about every little scratch and ding. Then all you have to worry about is drivin'http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif.

On a side note, my 2.5 year old boy http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gifjust found the joys of throwing rocks, and it seems the bigger the better. Nice ding behind the passenger rear door. Hope'n he doesn't learn that windows shatter when hit.

well when I was removing the duramaxdiesel emblems and putting the new medium duty duramax diesels on and the allison ones I chipped the paint...on the left door.

I haven't seen any chips in the rockers yet....

a couple dings on the doors (ends) not wher ea protector would go
some on the hood
nice scratches along the bed due to a hose at the dump...

other than that it's all good. Just want the upper areas touched up and then i'll be happy as a clam againhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
