Can I get away with towing a 5000lb car trailer (700 tongue) with a 11' camper in the bed? Too much hitch weight too far back?

Equalizer hitch?

Just for giggles you could measure the distance from the axle to the bumper location x weight for lb/ft totals based on max weight rating, then compare your proposed load the same way, should tell you if you're in the envelope.

There is a guy in WI who tows a 30' trailer with oak furniture and a big slide in camper. He's had Dodge and now has a Ford dually. The trailer has eight bolt wheels so I know he can carry a lot of weight in his trailer. I'm not sure of the hitch but the slider is massive. I believe 3" tube. He does craft shows full time and has ran this setup forever. Just saw him two weeks ago.

Mc Rat I have a 10'slide camper and tow a 24'tilt deck equipment trailer when loaded it weighs 9 to 12k.I installed a Superhitch reciever with a 18'extention , weight distbution hitch and air bags. Works great

It should be okay, the worst that could happen is that the front end might get a little light with all the weight back there but you could overcome that though with ballast and you have enough "meat" back there to do it as long as it is properly geared for the added load.

I do not think so, he has a lot more RWHP that a stock Dmax. A 8.1 will tow anything a Dmax will and then some. Big blocks have been dragging big trailers and powering big motor homes with trailers or cars in tow for nearly 30 years now, long before there was even the first light diesel.

It was a joke, McRat has a stack to run, which was the comment on power he may even need a bigger stack.

I've had and raced a lot of BBC, I've got a hopped up LS6 and the last LS7 GM built is sitting in dad's basement (still in crate).

But I'll still take a Dmax over any 8.1, I don't have enough time to keep stopping for fuel http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Me I think I would save my money and by cheaper 8.1. If it was between a 454 and a 6.6 I would go with 6.6 most likely but that 8.1 is a serious engine and fun to drive too and with a blower it would really be something. I do not drive that many miles a year in a truck and gas one is cheaper for my uses. Edited by: snoman

I have a 8.5 S&S on a '04 3500 Chevy, and pull a 14k 30' bumber pull trialer. I have it set up with an Equilizer hitch, Pulls like a SOB. I have not ever used the hitch extensions. I just do not like the idea. But i haven't done it either.
