: nictane install
redneck45 06-16-2004, 07:16 AM Got my kit a few weeks ago and finally got time to crawl under the truck. Looking for anyone who has installed the kit on an LLY. I looks like the shield on the pass side of the tank will need to come off? And the tank straps need to come off to get it off. Is this what you guys have done. I thought I read on an LLY the tank did not have to come down? I got the quick disconnect tool! The instructions say to bend or notch the shield! Also, there is a bracket right above the drive shaft that does not do anything, it is welded to the frame cross member and has a single bolt (not attached to anything) at the rear of it, what is this for? it is also in the way of clear access to the connection at the top of the tank. If I take the tank straps off how far will the tank drop? The truck is almost empty now and I am not driving it until I get this installed.
Diesel Power 06-16-2004, 10:14 AM i'm not sure what the bracket is for. my guess was some type of fuel transfer pump, but i've never seen anything mounted on it. i believe dmaxallitech has installed the kit on LLY's w/o lower the tank. on a 2004 LB7 i lower the tank about 4" by remove one side of each strap and support it with a floor jack, then bend the shield down. once you're done just bend the shield back up and re-attach the strap. as long as you don't drop the tank more than about 10" your lines shouldn't bind on anything.
lakingslayer 06-16-2004, 10:19 AM I disconnected the fill tube from the body then dropped the tank using my floor Jack to lower the tank. I placed a piece of scrap plywood on the jack so I wouldn't damage the tank. I was below 1/4 tank but it is still heavy. I also unbolted the fuel cooler from the frame to get easier access to the connector at the end of the tank. This method is easy (except for the fact that I was on a inclined driveway). I got this tip from one of the threads on this forum. Do a search and see what you find.
redneck45 06-16-2004, 12:08 PM Found the section dedicated to nictane install questions, I think I got what I need to tackle it. Will lower tank, possible drop the drive shaft, and disconnect the cooler, unless my bud shows up then will just lift the bed off. thanks.
mwgasman 06-17-2004, 01:48 AM I installed the nicktane kit on my LLY without dropping the tank or bending/cutting the shield.

i remember dmaxallitech saying that wasn't required on the LLY. is there any way you could elaborate?
thanks
Gent4157 06-17-2004, 06:39 AM Redneck; I just ordered my Nicktane and it should be in early next week. I plan to do the job next weekend, PLEASE let us know how the job went and if you did anything different from the directions! I dont fancy dropping the tank.
Thanks for the update.

DirtAndSand 06-17-2004, 11:25 PM Dalwolf,
Look at Diesel Power's signature a couple posts above yours, it has a hypertext link to the Nicktane website... Has a lot of useful info there or run a search here under nicktane.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Edited by: Dirt & Sand
redneck45 06-18-2004, 06:53 AM Sorry, still have not got to it yet, been working 7-12's, crazy I tell ya!
mwgasman 06-19-2004, 12:38 AM DP,
Sorry, ive been busy.
The shield didn't really seem to be in the way. I got under the truck and was able to sit under the truck to do the install. The shield wasn't really in my way at all. I am in no way sating the install was easy. It was really cramped in there and I did a lot of cursing. When we did my dad's install we left the tank in place and jacked up the bed.
One thing I will suggest to anyone doing the install is to mount the filter head to the mounting bracket PRIOR to installing the bracket on the truck. Your life will be alot easier.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
I think the flat bracket above the driveshaft is for the vapor cannister on the gassers.

mwgasman 06-19-2004, 12:43 AM DP,
If you would like to look at my truck, I will be passing through Sacramento tomorrow (6/19) and next Tuesday or Wednesday.
Let me know.

redneck45 06-24-2004, 07:04 AM Ok, still no weekends off, but down to 10 hr days now, so last night I tore into it. It went well, dropped the tank and cooler then bent down the shield. After removing the wrong line (I removed the small one instead of the larger one). Installed the head before I installed the mounting bracket, then ran lines, it got late so tonight I gotta put the tank back up and get some clean diesel and fill up the filter and screw it on tonight. Only question I have is the shield part of the mounting bracket faces toward the front of the truck? It doesn't seem that road debris would make it back that far! But the back of the filter is wide open exposed almost directly to the rear tire!? Mud doesn't scare me, but rocks do! I think I will fabricate some sort of heavy rubber flap between the tire and the filter! Also, I wish I would have installed it right after I got the truck when it was nice and clean!! I power washed under it, but I work construction and dirt seems to fall in to my face from everywhere! LOL!
redneck45 06-24-2004, 09:43 PM Well then, got er done tonight. Filled filter with fuel, screwed it on and she fired right up and ran perfectly. One last thing, as I was tightening the clamps and putting the tank back, I realized I forgot to install the spiral protection on the fuel lines! Had to take everything back apart, and that stuff takes forever to get wrapped on there!! Then when I was all done and checking for leaks, realized that one of the OEM lines was pinched between the tank and tank bracket--had to lower the tank one more time and push it behind the bracket!! So, all I got to do is worry about rocks and crap from the rear tire, and figure out when I should change the OEM filter--got 8,000 miles on it now.
DirtAndSand 06-25-2004, 02:11 AM Hey Red,
about how long was the total time for you to get it all done?? Also, did you find it to be easier to drop tank and cooler versus trying it as Nick suggests? I have had mine for a few days now, but havent had a chance to do the install yet. Prob gonna gofer it next week.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
Gent4157 06-25-2004, 06:47 AM Red;
Glad to hear everthing is back and working. Thanks for the information. Tonight is the night. I will attemp to install the filter. Can it be done without dropping the tank? When I hear about dropping the tank my skin crawls. It will be me only under the truck and I dont want a 200 lb tank shifting and ripping all the lines out! I will post tomorrow how the install went (If i still have fingers)
redneck45 06-25-2004, 06:48 AM 'bout three hours total. Yes, drop the tank and the cooler, it is easy. The cooler is held by to bolts, let it hang by the lines. The tank was very light, I ran it down to less than 1/4 tank until the light came on. I used an atv jack to lower the tank, but after it just got in the way I pulled it and just used some wood to prop it up then just got under it and pushed it up to get the bolts started. Still had to bend the shield on the tank down (hard on the wrists if you don't) it will not bend back to original shape, but will be very close. Truck runs great--50 miles to work this morning at 85mph and no problems. Put a little light oil on the filter gasket and fill it with clean diesel, then tighten it tight as you can by hand. One thing about the kit--the filter is very easy to get to and get a good grip on it. Also, I found the OEM lines easy to get off with the $10 tool, just push it into the fitting and give a good yank and let the fuel flow down your arm! LOL!
Gent4157 06-25-2004, 06:50 AM Red;
After looking at the filter shield , can it be turned 180 degrees and have the plate towards the back tire? It looks like the base can go in either way. Just a thought.
Diesel Power 06-25-2004, 10:23 AM You could turn the bracket 180*, however if you do the filter lines will not be coming out the correct direction and will require a loop to turn it around back towards the tank. FWIW, including my truck and my 3 local friends running them i haven't seen more than a paint chip or two in the filter can itself. two of my friends live on acerage in the mountains and use their trucks for work and have a 30 mile drive on dirt/gravel road in and out of their property ever day..
if the rear protection is a concern, some (tsckey) have used a piece of painter's shield to cover the rear fenderwell as seen here:

redneck45 06-25-2004, 01:10 PM Cool, I just tripped over an 18 wheeler mud flap here on the job, and picked it up and threw it in my truck, will start carving it this weekend!
DirtAndSand 06-25-2004, 01:11 PM heheheehe, their loss, your gain!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Gent4157 06-26-2004, 06:26 AM Its done! The install went well and I count ten fingers. I had to drop the drive shaft and bend the shield to get to the upper fitting. I did not have to lower the tank. Putting the filter head on the bracket before bolting the bracket to the truck is a must. All in all it was a 4 hour job. I sure like having that fuzzy feeling about clean fuel. Thanks Nick for the detailed instructions and the quick shipping. By the way I did the install yesterday and still smell like diesel fuel, is there a way to get that smell out of your skin? Not that its a bad smell. I'm just getting tired of it!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif
redneck45 06-26-2004, 07:12 AM Nope, the smell will go away in a day, your cloths on ther other hand are done--just keep them hanging in the garage for the next time you work on the diesel! Never thought about the drive shaft!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/8EE_Jul02293.JPGHere Here are pics of the install before and after I installed my homemade mudguard from the 18 wheeler flap I found at work. The dirt blends right in with the dirt on my truck. Don,t know how some of you keep your rigs so clean underneath, this thing was just power washed, and it only got 8,400 miles and is only three months old! Wait till after its first winter! Sorry about the cheap camara, if you don't hold it perfectly steady you get these types of pics, usually the wife takes the pics, but she could not figure out what I was taking a picture of or why! LOL! Edited by: Diesel Power
