I've read some posts that say duals are louder than single ex, why is that? say if you took the same "quiet" muffler and split it to two 4" pipes at the outlet why will it be louder?

Pretty good...it's the stereo effect that makes it sound louder.

More surface area to resonate? That and the volume thing.

rknrollo,

Mostly it's due to having an exit on the drivers side, you just can hear it better. The muffler is smaller some too but that doesn't make much of a difference in the total volume. The other thing is the tip you select, if you get one of our big 4 to 6 inch ones they tend to create a megaphone effect some too.

Sleeper, Dangerous, and Mark are definately 'spot on' regarding the driverside pipe. As they say in realestate, "Location, location, location".

If the only change was the left side pipe, exhaust sound pressure(measured in decibels aka db) will drop thru the pipes.

Another significant influence touched on by Mark regarding the pipe tip shape which influences another sound factor, known as "Sound Quality".

Simple way of demonstrating is, using your normal speaking voice starting saying, "Hello" over and over. While doing so...before running out of breath, keeping your hands away from your face, cup your hands and then bring them towards your mouth.

Note the sound difference. The air pressure (db) out of your mouth remains basically constant, but the sounds changes depending on hand location.
