Hello all, New to the forum but long time 6.5 owner. I have a 96 6.5 td and would like some opions on what is the max fuel pressure a 6.5 ip can handle. I have ditched my stock fuel pump, and fuel filter set up. I have gone with an aftermarket fuel pump and filter set up. Need to find a good place to set the pressure. Thanks in advance

The stock unit shows 12" a minuite flow when I floor it.

7.5psi max IP inlet pressure. New pump should flow 15gph.
If you're traveling 60mph for one hour, that's 4mpg...........

In the past I have used a Carter fuel pump that was factory set at 4-6 psi and it worked fine. The more important consideration is the flow rate. If you get 10 mpg and travel at 60 mph you better have a pump that will flow in excess of 6 gph. 10 would be on the safe side.

Another consideration is the current draw of the new pump. The Oil Pressure Switch contacts are rated at 1 amp. The factory pump draws 4 amps thus the common failure of GM OPSs. You may want to install a relay across the OPS if the new pump draws current greater than the stock pump. Details on my site.

Thanks for the help guys. The fuel pump I installed is a Aeromotive electric fuel pump. It flows 500lbs./hr at 451 psi. Thanks for pointing out the ops Howie. I was thinking I could just bypass the ops all together, is this possible ?? I have the engine dismantled right now waiting on my headers to get ceremic coated. Im just trying to get the fuel system all plumbed so I can route all the lines under where the turbo will be resting. Thanks agin guys.

The OPS is the safty for the fuel system. You could bypass it if you don't agree with everthing Ralph Nader stands for but it's not a good idea. If you do bypass it make sure you retain the circuit to the fuewl pump relay that is part of the OPS. This is what primes the IP during the glow plug cycle.
What pressure does that pump put out? 451psi?
