: Need race tips...
5fat1's 09-19-2006, 01:53 AM Correct me if I am wrong....(street racing the fard next to me on by the Circle K...
I hear to put it in Drive(not M) and 4HI, rev to 2100, take off, not sure about tow/haul, etc... is this the right stuff?
My truck is an 06 LLY, CC w/4WD, 4" lift, 18" wheels and 325/65/18 Nittos, NO other mods right now.
travrazz 09-19-2006, 05:15 PM I was wondering the same thing. I have an 05 lly with an edge/attitude. I've done some experimenting with the juice 3/5 and 4/5 with the tow/haul on and off. It seems to shift smoother with the tow/haul off, but am I putting more stress on my stock tranny that way, or does it even matter? Also, I never had any timed runs so should it do better with the tow/haul on or off? I would assume with it on since it has higher shift points. thanks
ratlover 09-19-2006, 05:31 PM At WOT once its trained TH or not dosnt make a difference in what I have found once the trans gets trained to both.
I would be leary of doing higher boosted launches in 4x4 with no tie rod sleeves. IMO get some sleeves and go onto some back road and find out were your truck likes to leave at RPM wise. Find out were it will leave without breaking traction. Start small and work up to it.
But yes....put her in 4x4 and roll forward a foot or 2, build some rpm/boost, and let her eat :grd:
5fat1's 09-25-2006, 01:20 PM why 4wd???? seems like that would slow things down a bit....
Wolford 09-25-2006, 01:24 PM why 4wd???? seems like that would slow things down a bit....
More traction, these trucks will blow right through the back tires in a race.
DJistheman 09-25-2006, 06:35 PM put it in R for RACE!
05LLY2500HD 09-25-2006, 07:26 PM put it in R for RACE! Nahhhhh. that's what hemis do.
5fat1's 09-29-2006, 03:36 AM thanks for the help guys... dj???? that dont help at all... go post on the fard forum...
5fat1's 10-01-2006, 02:14 AM well I tried it out tonight, racing my brother... and he does have "the edge" on his 04.5, I put it in 4HI and I got my rpms up to 2000 or so and we took off... DANG! what a rocket... I probably wore a few thousand miles off the tires. That launch technique really works, except my front left wheel started wobbling or vibrating to the pt that it got squirrly! Hopefully everything is cool with it. btw, right before posting I read I need tierod sleeves???? and need to do something to my transmission. Anything else before I ruin my truck? thanks again for the help
sickpuppy 10-01-2006, 12:17 PM get the transgo jr shift kit for the tranny works nice.
5fat1's 10-03-2006, 01:14 AM I did something to my right front wheel or something... its making a wicked noise and I'm not sure where to go from here... it sounded and felt like the wheel was hopping and breaking loose on the pavement when racing the other night. In fact, I had to let off the pedal as the truck was shuddering too much and started getting sideways. Anyone have any ideas? I want to race my bro-in-law and his new Dodge.
juniorcruzer 10-03-2006, 09:10 AM get those sleeves on there yet? That would be my first thing to check.

As far as diesel drag racing goes almost all of my experience has been with Powerstrokes. So please excuse my ignorance when I ask just why do I need and what are "tie rod sleeves".
Thanks
OneTALLGMC96 10-03-2006, 09:26 PM Tie-rod sleeves are a thicker piece of Aluminum or steel that slips over the tie-rod to give added strength. With the GM IFS, toe-in and the like causes the tie rods to bend (often like horseshoes)-:t
kr350psd 10-03-2006, 09:51 PM Where can you get these sleeves???
Thanks
kmayrer 10-03-2006, 09:54 PM Several of the vendors here sell them. I know that www.kennedydiesel.com (http://www.kennedydiesel.com) has them.
kr350psd 10-03-2006, 10:04 PM Thanks for the info guys.
Greatly appreciated.

5fat1's 10-03-2006, 10:42 PM I went to an aftermarket "truck" store tonight and the guy almost laughed me outta the store. He was saying sleeves are worthless and dont waste my $$$, that I should buy the complete "heavyduty" aftermarket rod/arm etc from him for $750/pair!!! I left pissed w/my tail between my legs as 3 or 4 of his reach-around buddies dog-piled on me about his comments.... I will never go back in there again... but as for my wheel problem the front tires get really toed-in while in 4hi and what I am hearing and feeling are the tires dragging across the pavement. Buddy thinks it may be a pitman/idler arm prob... anyone experience this?

Only when a tie rod was bent ever-so-slightly. May be a pitman/idler problem too. haven't had a problem w/ them yet(knock on wood)
ecc_33 10-29-2006, 12:34 PM look in the vendors part of this forum...super diesel...sells tie rod sleeves...and center links...if you get both of those it will be damn hard to even think about makin it toe in....
sweetdiesel 10-31-2006, 11:03 PM my buddy did a boosted launch not even very hard from a set of lights
broke Tie Rods on both sides of the truck they folded like a cheap tent
i kept telling him .....and it ended up costing him more money in the end
and imo its dangerous
but i still laughed at him):h as im sure the guy in the doge did too
prostock3 11-06-2006, 09:16 PM i never had a problem with 2wd lunch's but my truck is stock so maybe thats why..it seems to hook up fine with out spinning..

Yeah its amazing how people never listen. People see me do a launch and ask how to do it. I show them how to do it and tell them be sure to get sleeves. They must think i am blowing smoke and they go break stuff! Same thing happens when i tell them they need a built trans for big power. O well it is fun to watch :D
porterz 11-08-2006, 09:10 AM Admittedly.. I don't know if its due to them thinking you are blowing smoke.. they are probably sitting there thinking.. hey I can do this once or twice with no ill effects.. Some people like myself can't just plop all the money down at once. Mind you I am not saying it isn't stupid to tear your truck up just to try something out.. which is why I am being extremely nice to mine. lol but guys, thanks for all the input.. tie rod sleeves, built tranny.. all of that is certainly neccessary when you put down extra power
tlee05 11-08-2006, 01:47 PM Sorry Porterz if it sounded like i was bashing you. I was just saying the local kids in my town think they can have the fastest truck around and not take the time and research things to find out what breaks.
