How difficult is it to change the oil on these rigs? I know the service dept will use Delvac and will cost me @ $100 for them to do this for me. How much oil do these rigs hold? What to use to catch the oil when draining? What other things should I be looking out for when I change my oil? I just changed my fuel filter and my tranny was flushed with new filters (internal and external). Thankshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Question.gif

It is really not a problem to change the oil.
You need:
filter wrench
oil drain pan, I like the kind that you can seal up after use. Be sure to get one that will hold at LEAST 10 quarts, 15 would be better
a wrench to fit the oil drain plug
some rags or paper towel
10 quarts of oil
An oil filter (not Fram)
That is about it. If you are skinny like me, you don’t even have to jack the truck up you can just slide under and work.
Position your pan under the drain plug and remove the plug. The oil will come out with a lot of force; it has 10 quarts pushing it. Let it drain, wipe everything off and then put the plug back in.
Move the pan under the filter. Remove the filter. When you pull the filter off, be ready for about a pint of oil to come shooting out of the “pipe” that leads to the engine.
Wipe down the filter seat on the engine
Take a little bit of oil and lubricate the seal on the new filter
Put the new filter on HAND TIGHT.
From the top side, add 10 quarts of oil. A funnel helps but not required.
Start it up , check the oil pressure and check for leaks.
You just did a $100 oil change!

You better get your filters off the internet and find a good oil at a good price to make it worth while.

But, personally, I LIKE doing whatever maintainance I can do myself.

An oil change is SIMPLE and the filter is in a easy location! The above detailed instructions are great. I'll just add a few personal tips:

1. warm the engine up prior to the oil change to get the oil flowing better and help stir up all the 'stuff'

2. I always open the hood and remove the fill cap and dip stick before draining to 'vent' the system. -but as mentioned, it flows out just fine anyway

3. I start with the oil filter so I that when I drain the pan I can let it drip awhile to get as much old oil out as possible.

You should get the filters for about $10-$11 shipped if you buy a few at a time.

I get Delo 400 free so I dont know how much that should cost, but it takes 2 1/2 gallons apx. (10 qts.) so buy a case or two if you see a good price. (I hear wallmart has good prices but I dont support that sweatshop)

For conventional oil, I like either Delo 400 or Rotella T. I DO NOT want to start a oil debate so just accept that as MY personal choice.

You can spend money on synthetics which Are good stuff, but diesel soots up the oil so much I want to go with more frequent changes anyway. ~again, just my opinion

I was told by the dealer service rep that Rotella T and Delo 400 were ok to use. He said the dealer (Henna Chev in Austin TX) uses Delo 400. I can get 5 gallons Rotella T at a local Shell/Texaco distributor for about $30-$31 per 5 gallons. Found them by going to the Shell/Rotella website and searching for dealers by my zip code. They even sell a 55 gallaon drum for about a 10% savings, but not sure I want to keep that much around at one time.

Have question about the oil filters and fuel filters. Any recommendations? Read another post about Baldwin (B1441) oil filters. Are they acceptable? Can get them locally for $6.58 each.

Got my truck about 2 weeks ago.

I would run the Baldwin if I could get it locally at that price

I just did my second oil change and Im sending off a sample for analysis. It's Delo 400 with 5000 miles on it. I'll post the results when I get them...

Any comments on Wix filters? I can get an oil filter at the local NAPA supplier for $8.10 each.

Any comments about Wix filters? I can get a Wix oil filter (Wix Filter number 57202) at the local NAPA parts store for $8.10. The person there said Wix will not void warranty and that is in writing. Not that I'm to worried about that, but nice to know.

You can get all the part numbers for each filter (oil, fuel, air and transmission) at www.wixfilters.com
Click on the filter look-up tab at the top of the page. Enter in your truck data and all the part numbers pop up.
