If you put the deep pan on. do you need to remark the high level on the dip stick?

Max, Nope. Oil level stays the same. Deep pan just gives you more oil. Don't overfill. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

If you picture in your mind, the dipstick is measuring from teh top down. The deep pan adds capacity on the bottom (essentially). The more oil you can carry, the better the transmission will cool (more fluid to disperse the heat). If you added more oil, it would overfill as more oil in a stock pan is going to raise the level up.

Adding a deeper pan allows more fluid to be added to the bottom (so to speak) of the resevoir. The effect is the same upper level, but more actual oil. Hence, no need to chnge the markings on the dipstick as it hasn't moved.

This all makes sense, but the Allison book from Mike shows a separate part number for the dipstick when using the deep pan.

There is another deep stick but it is unnecessary for our application ... As said above fluid measurement is from the valvebody down not pan up ...

Just curious, lets say you are a quart over, what happens if you do overfill? How will it affect things?

Lightning,

In normal operation, the valve body sits submerged in fluid. All rotating parts sit high and (dry?) in the case. The fluid for lubrication and clutch apply is supplied by the pump. If the fluid level is over-filled to a point where it gets into the case, the rotating parts cause an introduction of large amounts of air into the fluid(cavitation). Death is sudden and final!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif All automatics have a different threshold as to what is too much. I don't know where the Ally stands.

Morale of the story: NEVER above the full mark. Below is no big deal.... Too much below and you just won't move.

That was a good explanation. I could not have said it better. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Thanks Mike, I guess working at a transmission plant (THM350, 700R4, 4L60, and 4L60E) for thirty years was good for more than puttin food on the table and a pension.

About too high, does being above the hot hight mark cause problems when pulling a heavy load , 11,000) at 65 to 70 mph and trans gets to 200 degress. At 160 degrees it is OK, put at 200 looks like a half to one quart over. Using Transyn change every 30,000 miles.

Oh Yes I tried Amsoil ATF for 10,000 miles, Transmission shifts a lot better when using transyn and mileage is a lot better. To slippery??

I know I will only use transyn now.

If the Ally is overfilled and you point the truck up ( like putting it on a trailer, fluid will blow out the overflow at the top rear of the trans. Ask the man who has done it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
