I just installed the Prodigy controller on my truck. It's an '04 LLY Chevy Crew cab 4 X 4. I had an ancient brake controller (Mfgr. unknown) hooked up and it worked o.k. but not smooth at all. I got the Prodigy wired in and no power on the battery line. I checked the 30 amp fuse in Stud#2 and it was blown. This may have happened when I was screwing around with the trailer batteries earlier in the day while it was still plugged into the truck, I don't know. It may have occurred when I was wiring up the Prodigy. I went ahead and replaced the 30 amp fuse with the 40 amp one that came with the truck in the trailer brake harness package. The Prodigy unit seems to operating correctly now. I am not clear on what that 40 amp fuse is actually for. I didn't use it the first time when I wired up and installed the ancient brake controller, and now I am not sure I have done the right thing by replacing the blown 30 amp trailer brake fuse in Stud#2 with the 40 amp. Is that, in fact, where it is supposed to go, or is it supposed to be installed in another location on the truck?? The owners manual is not very clear on any of this. What the heck is that 40 amp for anyway???
Thanks in advance for your thoughtful replies.

The 40 amp goes in "Stud 1" and is for the hot lead in the receptacle (battery charging for the trailer, etc.). I would replace the 30 amp as soon as possible for safety's sake.

Thanks!
So if I put the 40 amp in stud#1, it will charge the 12 volt system in my Toy Hauler while I drive? Right now there is a plastic plug in that hole, and it says in the owners manual not to put a fuse there.

Correct it will charge your battery. The owners manual tells you not to but a fuse there if you have dual batteries but that is only correct for gassers with dual batteries. Edited by: Max Power

Thank you all once again.
I'm getting ready to do the first oil change next.
Any sage advice on that front?

What Max Power said re: the fuses.
Lots of posts around on oil changes. The filter will be on extremely tight, so have a good filter/strap wrench on hand.

For some reason I blew the 30 amp trailer brake controller fuse a couple of times. A new 30 amp fuse was about $5 or $6 bucks at NAPA which seems like a lot to me. But I found out that if I used a 40 amp they could be bought for a much cheaper price. That is what I did, as I wanted a spare also.
