: 24' Flat deck trailers
BlackMax Canada 09-17-2006, 08:31 PM Seriously looking at a 14K Tandem or triple axle deck-over trailer. Question is:
1) Gooseneck?
2) Bumper pull w/torsion bars?
Pulling with my 05 3/4 ton and I know I'm good for 14K GVWR trailer.
Of course the Gooses are real nice but X2 the cost around here anyway. I'm more interested in hearing about handling, bounce, pin wt vs. tongue weight.
Been reading up on 5er / Goose hitches in this forum and got that pretty much under control. Just the trailer now.
Thanks
IH PULR 09-17-2006, 08:41 PM Goose neck is the best way to tow as far as im concered you can load the trailer so that there is just enough weight on your truck to make it ride nice , the best part of thr g-neck is the easy manuvering and comfort of ride.If you need alot of GVW then i would go with tandem dauls not three axels ,the three axle trailers are tough on tires if you do any city or town driving ,also the g-neck is much more forgiving were you load the weight if youve ever been on the highway with a poorly loaded bumper pull you know thats not much fun and can be very dangerous
Dieseldreamr 09-18-2006, 04:59 PM I agree we have a 34" flatbed 5'er at work with tandem duallies and it works great, I believe it was made but Freisen trailers in Oklahoma maybe? one of our owners trucks ('06 CTD 3500 CC 4x4 6spd)is the main hauler for that trailer but we recently put a hitch in a '94 powerjoke F250 and that will be our truck. ill try to get some pics if you want
BlackMax Canada 09-18-2006, 09:56 PM Thanks for your valued input.
I just went to see a 14k All hot dipped galvanized double frame 28 footer, plank deck (between tires). Pretty sweet trailer, but I think I'm leaning toward deck-over wheels. Some prices are crazy for used stuff and there are some new ones cheaper than used up here.
The more I think about it, I should go goose, but right now they are X2 of a pumper puller...and I know more then twice as good. right?
emerson 09-18-2006, 10:07 PM I had a bumper pull for my skidsteer and never again if I can help it. Make sure you get a deck over wheels, the extra unabstructed width is great. The tandem dually is a good setup, but the scales will look closer if they see that behind a pickup. Also, unless you're going to run over GCVW, the tandem single wheels take all the weight you're legal for. As for the pin weight, get airbags. When I pull another heavy trailer I'll add them. Be sure you have load range E tires.

The way I look at it the 14k tandem will still get enough cargo # without going over GCVW. If I go to a heavier/longer trailer (example tri-axle) it will only decrease my caro capacity, defeating the purpose of a heavy hauler.
blizzardplowman 09-18-2006, 11:22 PM I run a 25' 18k tandem dual GN, came from a 12k bumper pull, would never look back, ride is much better, weight is easy to balance. Corn pro is the brand, set me back 7200 new about 4 years ago.

Check out http://www.trailtech.com/ out of Sask. I have one of their gooseneck deck over tilting trailers. The tilt setup allows me to get into a lot of areas that the beaver tail would hang up. It's one solid trailer and a little heavier because of the tilting frame setup. I actually streched it from a 24' 14k dbl axle to a 28' 21k tri axle.
BlackMax Canada 09-21-2006, 08:23 PM Yep, they have nice stuff...no dealers here in Ontario though. Going to look at a bumper pull tomorrow and if its not what I like, should be going for the GN.
Trouble is, nothing local within 300km's. I gotta hit the road and hope for the best.
RevHappy 09-22-2006, 06:25 PM Look up a place called "Antique Auto Sales" in Monroe, Michigan. I'm originally from that area have bought a few trailers thru them. They typically have the lowest prices in the surrounding area, and, usually have just what you're looking for in stock.
Here's a number to help you out: (734) 241-9403
Good luck!
BlackMax Canada 09-22-2006, 10:48 PM Been on the road all day and put on almost 900km's looking at trailers. Good news: Picked er up this afternoon. 19'flat tandem deck-over PLUS 5' "pop up" Beaver to make a completely flat 24 footer.
Couldnt believe it, the plank floor is 19 foot hardwood 2X6. Its 1 year old hardly a scratch on it.
14k GCWR, Tor-Flex axles dual crank dollies, hardly knew it was on behind.
Will post some pics of the beaver in a day or so.
partsguy662 09-22-2006, 10:54 PM Blackmax....What exactly are you planning on hauling??
BlackMax Canada 09-22-2006, 11:04 PM Bro has an air-trak type drill and compressor and gear which is ready for work. Small jobs here and there. The entire city I live in is rock. Put it this way: NASA tested the moon buggy here.
Little jobs like drilling posts holes for perimeter fencing at small quarries, pits, widening a few bush roads....
We'll see what it brings. I have a full time (brother too), and this will likely be a side-line / hobby.
I always have some crap to drag around and there's always someone needing a load of wood brought home, etc.

Its raining here today, I'll snap some shots for those who want to see the BEAVER TAIL of the trailer....
BlackMax Canada 09-24-2006, 03:35 PM As promised, and as someone mentioned earlier, they are a bit "spendy" new, but doing my homework around here for new and used, and the configuration of this particular trailer I picked it up for comparable used prices for PJ, Big Tex, and JDJ that had a ton of use and don't have pop up beaver tails, etc. This one is a year old and hardly a mark on it.
